Regardless of whether or not the Japanese "worshiped" the Emperor or not, any invasion would have been horrific.

Napalm was the other WMD of choice at the time...instead of nuking two cities, we may have ended up Dresdening 20 cities.

While the author does make a good case the "average Tokyo Joe and Jane" didn't worship the Hirohito, the military (numbering several million) were conditioned to fight pretty damn hard to say the least.

That said, they should have dropped the 1st bomb in the middle of Tokyo Harbor - as a display of power.

Um, we pretty much "Dresdan'ed" Tokyo and every other major Japanese city. "Flyboys" has some pretty riveting, upsetting accounts of US firebombings. In fact we killed more Japanese civilians via firebombing than we did with "the bombs."

Likewise, the book also portrays the hideous war crimes carried out by the Japs in China, such as the infamous "Beheading Contest" between two Imperial Army lieutenants...

It also goes a long way in explaining the warped Japanese military mindset based on a fraudulent, revisionist version of "The Code of Bushido," and how drunken and corrupt Japanese officers mistreated their men, and even forced them into acts of symbolic cannibalism (of captured US Naval aviators in this case) "Flyboys" is a real eye opener as to how neither side in the war was totally "innocent."
