    That is nonsense...

Dude, I used food stamps and let me tell you, it was a pretty low feeling for me, but I had kids that needed to eat and a wife who is disabled.

Food stamps are fine if you need them...

That still didn't make it any easier to deal with the looks and comments from those behind me in the line who had cash.
I was in a way, ashamed to use it but like I said, I had no choice.

You should be proud for using and not abusing the system...

It did help me mentally gear up an stop feeling sorry for myself so I could get out and find a way to provide a better life for me and my family, and I did just that, but I have two degrees and it did help.

    The american way. HARD WORK!

If the minimun wage was at least equal to what it costs to pay the rent, buy groceries, pay the electric and phone bills, i honestly believe that more people would take pride in their own lives and change their situation.

No.. there would be no reason to better yourself...

But in the same breath, if they can do no better by working, what is the motivation to try and do better?

    Exactly...

It is a system designed to keep a person down and I do believe that increasing the wage would go a long way in getting people to stand on their own two feet.

The system is one of opportunity. Anyone who wants to stand on their own two feet can...

Would someone explain to me why raising someone's wages would not help them get off welfare??

          $25/hr

Just kidding. I don't know what to, but I know I would have a hard time supporting myself on minimum wage.

Pinky knows my thoughts on the spending levels of the Bush admin. Obviously, a fiscal Conservative he is not. But that doesn't trump the conservative ideology. And face it, the liberal ideology has been about "tax and spend" since right after the Depression.

Now that the nit-picking is over, the conservatives in government have essentially been the movers and shakers. I know, it's kind of a contradiction (given the definition of "Conservative"), but it makes it no less true. The dems are the ones who benefit from having as many people on the dole as possible. Big Government in a staple of their ideology.

And anytime you've got Government making decisions for you, you're losing freedom.

And I stand by my assessment that the Dems have the only true (racial) terrorist elected in their party. And that's the asshole KKK Robert Byrd.

The deal with minimum wage jobs, aside from the low wage itself is that few if any of them have any benefits.

Welfare itself pays even less than minimum wage. But when you add on the food stamps, free medical care, subsidized rent, etc., then it's pretty easy to see why someone would prefer to stay in that system than work for minimum wage where none of these things are included.

Now I've never been on welfare and don't forsee any circumstances where that would ever happen. But I have lived on unemployment compensation that barely covered the rent, and I have worked minimum wage jobs where it was very hard to make all the bills and, according to the state, made "too much money" for food stamps. So to some degree, I can understand where these people are coming from.

And with Bush losing 3 million jobs, the situation can only get worse. The supposed "new jobs" created under the BCE are worthless in terms of the big picture, as most are low wage service sector jobs, many without benefits. Which brings us back to the original problem.

And I agree! Welfare should never ever be more prosperous than employment (at any wage).

                      So, welfare cuts it is!

At the very least the minimum wage in the US should be $9.00 an hour. $10.50 plus benefits would be a great start.

Rent is through the roof (It is better to buy a home and earn equity)
                        Food is on the rise
Gas is rediculous (I'm not bitching, I own a gas hog)
Electricity has almost doubled in the last 5 years.
Phone has always been to high but it hasn't gone up much in 10 years.

Extras will require extra income, internet, PC, Cable etc.

$9.00 an hour will generate enough to meet these bills with no frills of course, but with a good budget and no compulsive spending people can ive on this.

Employers in Ohio with $500,000 or more in gross annual sales must pay a minimum wage of $5.15 per hour.
Employers with less than $500,000, but at least $150,000 in gross annual sales must pay $3.35 per hour.
Employers with less than $150,000 in gross annual sales must pay employees at least $2.80 per hour.

I never even applied at a place that paid less than $10.00 and hour and with my lifestyle that was tough making ends meet as it was.

Shit, welfare looks like a pretty good deal to a mother fucker who is lazy and has no self esteem. and if he's dealing and doing drugs it is no wonder they live in a nicer home than mine and driving a brand new car with a fridge packed full of steaks and snacks out the ass.

Then, they take $200.00 for a family health plan on top of that?

Raise minimum wage to $9.00 and hour and i guarentee people would get off their ass and find a job.

Settle down, bro...It is the poor who are serving God more faithfully than the rich are.
The poor people fear death and God, the rich fear losing their money which will happen against all their preparations and safe guards.

Judgement will find everyone, but you know this already.
