from 1 Thessalonians, Chapter 3........
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

Now this seems to be a description of Jesus taking a group of believers with Him to Heaven. What's NOT made clear here is whether such an event would happen before the Tribulation (reign of the Antichrist), or after, or at the middle point. Scriptural arguments can be made for either case, as Jesus said "he who endures to the end will be saved" but another scripture says "for the sake of the elect, those days would be shortened".
So there is biblical grounds for the "rapture" but not necessarily a solid case for WHEN on the apocalyptic timetable it would take place.
Many people are convinced that it will take place on a Jewish holiday such as Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), so that way the 7 year tribulation could conveniently begin on New Years day, and you would know what New Years Eve NOT to drink on, unless you wanted to face God with a hangover in the morning.
