One could certainly make the argument that the words of the Pope or of the future President of the United States are of public interest, but the outrage at the publishing comes from the cultural significance placed on the Wailing Wall by the Jews. They consider it sacred ground, and the prayers placed in that wall as the property of God, not the press.

It's more symbolic than anything - obviously God, being omniscient, doesn't need to actually look at holes in a wall to find prayers. But why would the media find it necessary to shit all over the tradition of that location? It's like reading someone's diary or whatever.
