45% Of Doctors Would Consider Quitting If Congress Passes Health Care Overhaul

Care to wait in line for a Dr. like you do at the DMV?

Two of every three practicing physicians oppose the medical overhaul plan under consideration in Washington, and hundreds of thousands would think about shutting down their practices or retiring early if it were adopted, a new IBD/TIPP Poll has found.

The poll contradicts the claims of not only the White House, but also doctors' own lobby — the powerful American Medical Association — both of which suggest the medical profession is behind the proposed overhaul.

It also calls into question whether an overhaul is even doable; 72% of the doctors polled disagree with the administration's claim that the government can cover 47 million more people with better-quality care at lower cost.

The IBD/TIPP Poll was conducted by mail the past two weeks, with 1,376 practicing physicians chosen randomly throughout the country taking part. Responses are still coming in, and doctors' positions on related topics — including the impact of an overhaul on senior care, medical school applications and drug development — will be covered later in this series.

    Major findings included:

    • Two-thirds, or 65%, of doctors say they oppose the proposed government expansion plan. This contradicts the administration's claims that doctors are part of an "unprecedented coalition" supporting a medical overhaul.

It also differs with findings of a poll released Monday by National Public Radio that suggests a "majority of physicians want public and private insurance options," and clashes with media reports such as Tuesday's front-page story in the Los Angeles Times with the headline "Doctors Go For Obama's Reform."

Nowhere in the Times story does it say doctors as a whole back the overhaul. It says only that the AMA — the "association representing the nation's physicians" and what "many still regard as the country's premier lobbying force" — is "lobbying and advertising to win public support for President Obama's sweeping plan."

The AMA, in fact, represents approximately 18% of physicians and has been hit with a number of defections by members opposed to the AMA's support of Democrats' proposed health care overhaul.

    • Four of nine doctors, or 45%, said they "would consider leaving their practice or taking an early retirement" if Congress passes the plan the Democratic majority and White House have in mind.

More than 800,000 doctors were practicing in 2006, the government says. Projecting the poll's finding onto that population, 360,000 doctors would consider quitting.

    Hahahah.

The title of this story should be 45% of doctors lie to pollsters.

It's pretty meaningless, too. Hell, I "consider" quitting my job just about every day. Doesn't mean I plan to do so.

Gotta love these questions. I wonder which "health care plan" these "randomly" chosen physicians had in mind when they answered the questions? They were sent out 2 weeks ago, so they can't be the new plan that Obama has proposed.

        Silly.

This is as confusing as that claim that "4 out of the 5 dentists that recommend their patients chew gum, recommend Trident". What in the royal fuck does that even mean?

Well... let's see... we'll break this, and tackle one bit at a time.

I guess that some dentists, not all, recommend their patients chewing gum. Whether it's sugar free or the regular kind, we have no idea. But let's suppose it's sugar free.

Then, out of the dentists that DO recommend their patients chewing gum, some, not all, recommend Trident. Why thy recommend this particular brand, is subject to discussion. Let's say because it's an easy name to remember.

So, there you have it. It's really simple. Let's check it again.

LOL! Yeah. Kind of like I wanted to put staples in the head of a former boss but reasonable thinking took over.

Everyone knows that people in the US are getting ripped off having to pay too much for health care.

Obviously a lot of doctors will want that to continue.

OK...so a percentage of dentists polled (out of an overall percentage not specified) of dentists that do approve of gum chewing is juxtaposed against a number of dentists that do not (again, number not specified) to reflect a 4-to 5 bias in favor of a product, while the poll fails to establish what the other chewing gum choices (if any) were offered.

                          Now it makes sense.

Well, yes... 80% of the dentists that DO recommend chewing gum - like you said, we have no idea how many they may be, because there is no indication, percentual or otherwise, of dentists who recommend chewing gum versus dentists who do not - prefer Trident over any other brand - again, like you said, if indeed any other was offered - of chewing gum.

You know, Chef... while it COULD have been done that way, with the needed "tweaking" of percentages to fit the needed final result, I'd wager on the possiblility that they just kinda "guessed".

Then again, if it was on TV, it must've been true... TV NEVER lies.

All those women WILL fall at your feet if you choose to drink that particular brand of soft drink.

                            It's true.

                            Cheers! :bottle:
