I do agree fully that we should take care of this planet and it's resources as wisely as possible.

Although I do wonder given the dynamics of our natural system how much of an overall impacts are we really having... or how full of ourselves are we really being..?

There, I fixed it for ya.

      No no, no thanks necessary...

It's a valid question, and it presupposes another issue. (I'm fully aware that I'm about to come across like a certain severely unhinged female poster at this site, but...) The truth is, we are not the only ones living here. The matter calls to mind that line Spock said in "Star Trek: The Voyage Home":

"There are other forms of intelligence on Earth, Doctor. Only human arrogance would assume the message must be meant for man."

I'll admit, it's a goofy way of making a point, but as the so-called superior race on the planet, we owe it not only to ourselves, but all life to insure the viability of a future without wrecking the joint both needlessly and senselessly.

I don't know the exact details, but where is that area (I believe it's above the Northwest Territories) that ships can now traverse for the first time ???

Good point... read an article recently that biologists/scientists have determined Dolphins have higher intelligence than chimps who were long assumed the closest level to humans.

The scientists suggested we treat dolphins as an intelligent being rather than another wild creature.

I personally don't think we're the only intelligent beings in the universe... and don't laugh at my foil hat!!

Exactly. There's now a "viable" shipping route across the fucking Arctic Ocean. Greenland is actually GREEN. Iceland is no longer ice (they're also bankrupt, but that's another story)

I remember being taught in school that the names Greenland and Iceland were used purposely by the inhabitants to mislead people venturing about the oceans years ago, in order to maintain a form of isolationism. Of course, you must consider that a great deal of my education came via South Florida public schooling.

All I know is we haven't had a lot of snow this year so far, and I am waiting on a GOOD ONE to spark up the snow blower to see if it works or not. We had a week of real cold weather, but it's now above freezing and may even hit 40 degree's today. January thaw I suppose...

I try like hell to keep things all fluffy bunnies and pink daisies. But brutal truth smacks me in the ass all the time.

On the other hand it's 51 degrees here right now, at 6:45 in the morning in mid January. Granted, it's been a wet rainy week and there are flood warnings in all of the usual places, but temperature wise, it's unusually warm.

So if the utility companies charge me what they usually do in February, I'll know damn well the bastards are lying, because I haven't had the heat on this month at all.

I used to work at the Department of Energy's Hanford laboratory and we are sitting on so much technology that would make energy cheap and clean it's not funny. My uncle was a physicist at Los Alamos and says the same thing.

One technology I saw was a mechanical biological filter that you run exhaust from a coal gasification plant through and it converts the exhaust to bio diesel. Hanford has so much weapons grade plutonium sitting in storage. This was suppossed to be used as reactor fuel to generate electricity but the electric companies threw a fit. Hanford and the Nuclear Engineering Laboratory are huge, secure sites and it was looked at building reactors that could convert weapons grade plutonium into electricity. Both sites if they followed the plan could generate electricity so cheap for the western United States people wouldn't even bother to burn natural gas or oil, they would heat their homes with electricity.

The bottom line is the big boys club doesn't want to fix any problems because they make more money that way and they jump on the environmental wagon to create scarcety of energy which drives the prices up.

Energy and be cheap and clean right now. It's greed that keeps this from happening.
