    Times Sq bomb scare

Police seal part of Times Square
Part of New York's Times Square has been sealed off as police investigate a suspicious vehicle.

The area was evacuated while a bomb squad was sent to check the contents of the vehicle on 45th Street, the New York Police Department said.

A spokesman for NYPD told the BBC that the bomb squad had discovered petrol and propane canisters inside.

Police were first alerted to a report of a car on fire, and streets between Seventh Avenue and Eighth were closed.

The bomb squad was removing the canisters from the vehicle, although it was not clear if they were for any illegal use.

Police refused to confirm a report by Reuters news agency that explosives had been found in a car.

An unnamed fire department officer told Reuters that a man was seen fleeing the scene.

Part of the popular tourist area in the centre of Manhattan has been cleared of pedestrians as officers investigate.

"There seemed to be smoke coming out of the car," NYPD Detective John Sweeney told AFP news agency.

"Now they're removing stuff out of the car to check what it is. No-one has determined it's a bomb."

Paul Bresson, head of the FBI's public affairs office at the bureau's Washington headquarters, told AP news agency that agents were on the scene.

A senior government official told AP the suspicious vehicle was a Nissan Pathfinder.

Part of Times Square was also sealed off last December after a report of a suspicious van, although nothing dangerous was found.

I cannot find any recent updated reports (that article is from over an hour ago), but the vehicle's plates do not trace back to it, there was a poorly constructed device that did not explode correctly, and a timer was found attached to the device. The materials found with the device were containers of propane, gasoline, and a black substance believed to be gunpowder.

Another Saturday night in the city.

Maybe they should question this guy.

Obviously an amature. Bombs aren't hard to make if you know what you are doing. Propane bombs are tricky because you have to have the right fuel to oxygen ratio or they just don't work. Gasoline will just burn. It has a high flash point and burns fast but rarely explodes. Cars crash full of gas all the time and some vehicles have propane canisters on them. The asshole would have done more damage if they just pegged the accelerator and drove through a big crowd of people. A rolling car going fast would do more damage than his stupid home made fuck up.

            Slow news week?

CNN's running the big headline "TIMES SQUARE SCARE"

At first they were trying to make a muslim connection because the vehicle was supposedly illegally parked near the Viacom building (since they own Comedy Central), but now they've got surveillance footage showing a white male in his 40s getting out of the SUV...so does that (and the rinky-dink construction of the device) point to the Teabagged?

The Teabaggers are well organized and are taking the Martin Luther King/Ghandi approach of non-violence. I know a couple of people in that movement and they are not militant people at all so the this trying to blame them for some idiot is not with reality. Of course the Muslims are always there to blame. We know it's not the Irish. They make good bombs. LOL! I think it was some wanker working on his own.

What's done the most damage is all the media talking heads and politicians scrambling for attention over this incident. Seeing this makes people sick to their stomach and can cause nausea and barfing. I don't think the bomb made anyone puke.

With various media tripping all over themselves to get the details out there, the truth often gets left behind as facts only get in the way of a good story. In a couple of days when the furor has died down and the story get's bumped to the back of the paper, it just might be quietly mentioned (in small print in a tiny article on page 14D, right next to the obituaries) that this wasn't a bomb scare after all. What was found in the vehicle turned out to be a hibachi, some lighter fluid and a container of black pepper, along with some hamburger meat, rolls, potato salad, two cans of Bush's baked beans, a jar of pickles, some paper plates and plastic sporks. In other words, the police successfully thwarted some poor fucker's bbq and/or tailgating plans for Sunday afternoon's Yankees-White Sox game.

I've never seen a car bomb before that didn't even destroy the fucking car.

What a joke. I've driven cars worse than that one was after it 'exploded'

The teabaggers are anything but "well-organized." They're a fractured clusterfuck running the gambit of regular people with legitimate concerns to conspiracy fuckbags with a martyrdom fantasy...

I still can't believe that was first item on the news here, in the week of an election too.

Conversely I heard this week that when the London bombings which killed 50 people a few years ago happened, Fox News reported it like this.

'There has been a major terrorist attack in a European capital. We'll tell you which one after the break.'
