Nungesser tells Senate oil response roles remain unclear

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser is in Washington today. He testified this morning before a U.S. Senate committee, and he told lawmakers that the "responsible party" is failing.

"You've got the parish presidents running the whole show," Nungesser told the panel. "BP could fire all their contractors because they are doing absolutely nothing but destroying our marsh."

Nungesser explained that he feels the contractors and BP are standing in the way of saving the coast. He was also angry with the Coast Guard.

"I still don't know whose in charge. Is it BP? Is it the Coast Guard?" Nungesser asked. "When I get mad enough in a meeting, the Coast Guard in our office stands up and says, 'I can make that happen.' When I throw a BP official out of my office, he comes back the next day and approves something."

The Plaquemines president said all of that is delaying efforts to battle the attacking crude.

"I have spent more time fighting the officials of BP and the Coast Guard than I have spent fighting the oil."

I just can't believe that nothing has been done yet. Just a lot of hand wringing and finger pointing and passing of the buck by everybody involved.

When is SOMEBODY going to wake up and do something about this?

The answer is obvious. Too much time has passed and too many other alternatives have failed. Like it or not, Obama is going to have to take to the airwaves, take matters in hand and authorize a controlled low grade warhead strike of the area. It'll no doubt cost him another four years in the White House, but I'd rather see him take the fallout by doing something actually heroic and STOPPING THIS.

That area is never going to recover. But at least it can be stopped before more damage is done.

There are guys in Washington who KNOW THIS. There are professionals who KNOW THIS. Christ, if I know it, obviously somebody else does. The time for haggling for a better position in the disaster is over, the time to DO SOMETHING is now. Anybody worried about their own political and/or business interests should really take a long, hard look in the mirror.

The extreme heat stands a good chance of generating a really tough seal if done underwater. It worked for the Soviet Union four out of five times, and the fifth failed because they didn't have adequate geological data on the area they were doing it. A seafloor nuclear detonation is DEFINITELY not my first choice (or second, or even third) but frankly, there isn't a lot of room for preferential treatment among options.

It's definitely a concern, but...if it goes on much longer without a solution, I'm afraid the environment is going to be fucked anyway. If it's not already. Like I said, this isn't my first choice, and under normal circumstances I wouldn't even remotely humor it, but at this point, the humorless is starting to look more and more feasible in the light of continual, ongoing damage that seemingly has no end in sight.

That said, I think they've taken the option off of the table entirely. Nobody really wants to dirty their hands going down that road, and I guess I can't be surprised.

they are s'posed to be done with relief wells in 6-8 weeks i thuink. anf the current cap is collectin' abnout half the oil, maybe. with a better cap comin' soon. it seems as tho at least the amount bein' lost is reduced quite a bit.
