    Is this shirt racist?

Watching Bill Oreilly tonight. He was talking with the leader of the NAACP Washington division. Anyways, the NAACP has set up a website teapartytracker.org to basically keep an eye on the Tea Party events to point out & chastise any racism that happens. All the guy from the NAACP could point to since April (the date when the Tea Party sent an official correspondence to the NAACP repudiating all racism, bigotry, etc...) was this 1 guy wearing this "offensive" t-shirt.

I don't see this shirt as racist, but more a statement of facts*. Yeah, the guy is trying to push peoples buttons by wearing it. I wouldn't have worn, nor condoned the wearing of it...just due to it obviously being intended to agitate the opposite side. But racist shirt? I don't see it that way. I think if people have a real problem with what is on this guys shirt, they need to address the issues on this guys shirt. Not the guy wearing it, or especially not the organizations' event he was attending.

Anyways...just curious of other peoples thoughts on the shirt. So far I only have the NAACP's view on it.

I think my main problem with the whole thing is the blaming of the Tea Party due to 1 guys t-shirt at 1 event. No organization can be expected to enforce dress codes for rallies and monitor every single person that attends

Link to site at bottom of post.

*I'm going on the premise this guys shirt is factually correct. I'm currently in the process of some self education on slavery happening in other countries. GO GO INTERNETS - AWAY!!

        LOL

I'm going to take that as a vote for "yes, you think it's a racist shirt".

It is derogatory. I wouldn't wear it unless a black man gets in my face, and asks for reparations because some of our ancestors owned slaves back in the 1800's. But my shirt would also say my irish ancestors were slaves.

The problem is it looks like he's trying to justify slavery. With no context it's easy to say the guy supports slavery or he is a racist. But I would rather dig deeper and understand why he is wearing it -- is it in response to somebody's statement?

I saw it more as he was saying blacks are just as much at fault for slavery as whites are....not that he is justifying it. And perhaps blacks may be more culpable because in parts of the world they still have slavery, while whites have abolished it.

But what the fuck do I know? I swear to God until I read that shirt, I had never heard of Mauritania. After I looked it up I realized his shirt had it spelled wrong.
