I don't want to sound patronizing but I think it's cool that someone at 21 knows that the US president is far less powerful than most people seem to think.

This woman didn't just come out of nowhere though she was on the state senate for a while too.

We have our fair share of fuckwit politicians here too I guess but she does seem to have some extra idiotic ideas.

Looking at her CV though unlike Palin she does actually seem to have done quite well academically so I blame religion.

Don't get me wrong there are plenty of sensible religious people who are cool but sometimes it seems to blind side certain people and just lead them to a kind of insanity.

I've met some really intelligent people who happen to be people of religion.

has a great conversation a few times with my college campus pastor, that actually on ocassion would veer onto politics.

I just think sometimes, that corrupt people are more to blame, than the religion per say.

The Democratic liberal senator Harry Reid is a Mormon. Mormons are usually stereotyped as being crazy assed conservatives not crazy assed for sale to the highest bidder pass the pork liberals.

Your fuckwit politicians put on a better show. I would rather watch a spat in the House of Commons over our boring congress any day.

I was offered a great job by 3M in St. Paul but just couldn't accept the job. I flew to Minneapolis for the job interview in January and holy shit it was fucking biting cold there! I just couldn't get into the place and never regretted not moving there.

It's actually probably actually less powerful than the US Congress because it is more closely tied to the executive but the best thing about the House of Commons is that it forces the PM to defend himself in a debate for 30 minutes a week with the effect that a complete fuckwit can't make it.

I really don't think someone like George Bush could be elected here. In practice I'm not completely sure it matters a huge pile of fuck one way or the other to be honest though since Blair was excellent at it but ultimately made the same mistakes.

The hardline Dawkins argument is that the moderate sensible religious people are enablers who give validity to the nutcases.

I'm not totally sure of that argument since there are plenty of crazy people who worship religions that don't have a moderate wing.

The current Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Anglican church which claims to have hundreds of millions of followers, is one of those super smart, kind Christians.

I think Gervais here makes exactly all the arguments I would and although the Archbishop is one of the most well read advanced theologians on the planet he doesn't really have any very useful answers IMHO.

Can't your parliament actually remove a prime minister with a vote of incompetance? Getting rid of a president is a huge ordeal. The Senate can impeach them but they just stay in office and enjoy all the powers they had before.

In the US the government is three pieces of pie. The Congress, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial branch. The president has as much power as the Senate and House. The Supreme Court is supposed to hold all laws passed by the president up to the US Constitution. So even if a bill gets passed by the congress and signed into law by the president the Supreme Court can shoot it down in flames if it's determined as being unconstitutional by the court. Also our system is based on population and equality. Each state gets two senators but the house is based on the population of each state. So in the senate Wyoming is equal to California but in the house California out numbers us. Since all laws have to be approved by the senate, each state has it's equal say. Once bills are passed into law, the executive branch is the administrator over what the laws set up. One mistake we have made over the years is making the president too powerful and during George W. Bush's reign he pretty much set up a potential dictatorship using security as the excuse. We need to whittle the executive branch back down to size in my opinion.

That's kind of a pointless endeavor.

It's illustrated perhaps no more vividly than when Christopher Hitchens made a few appearances on Sean Hannity's show several years back, where one person is speaking about various topics and issues and making their points by means of drawing from verifiable facts and utilizing logic, while the other person is putting forth opinions based on rigid ideological orthodoxy and their gut emotions.

To be factually correct, she stated 200 million per day. The White House scoffed at that, yet never gave any actual figures. Most accepted estimates are in the 25 million per day ballpark. Far cry from 200 million but still a shitload of dough.

I think part of the issue was the secret service rented out the entire luxury hotel the President stayed at. Normally they don't do this, but they felt this was the only real way to make sure he was secure the way the hotel was laid out & considering what country he was in.

A lot of people ran with that story from some Indian newspaper I believe. That's a huge problem that has become commonplace. No one seems to check facts anymore because they are in such a hurry to be first with the story. With the 24 hour instant news cycle on cable & Internet, they don't have the luxury anymore of the paper running at 5 am or news at 11 pm. NOW NOW NOW.
