Vaccine-Autism Link Total Bullshit and Intentional Fraud!

Dr. Besser's Notebook: The Fallout of Fraud
Moving Forward After Investigation Deems Vaccine-Autism Link a Deliberate Fraud

    By RICHARD BESSER, M.D.

ABC News Senior Health and Medical Editor
    Jan. 6, 2010

An investigation published in the British Medical Journal by Brian Deer lays out in detail a strong case that a paper published in 1998 by British surgeon Andrew Wakefield that purportedly demonstrated a link between the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and autism was deliberate fraud.

Fraud! Not bad science, but rather a deliberate attempt to demonstrate the author's predetermined conclusion that vaccines cause autism.

Why in the world would anyone do that? According to the investigation, Wakefield was hired by a law firm that was suing vaccine manufacturers to provide scientific evidence that vaccines caused autism. Wakefield received roughly $750,000 for his efforts.

As a pediatrician, a public health practitioner and a parent, this report hits me at an emotional level. To have vaccine safety questioned because of a fraudulent study is almost unfathomable. I trained in pediatrics in the late 1980s and saw the devastating impact on children's lives of many diseases that are now preventable because of vaccines. I've worked around the globe and have watched children die from measles, meningitis, tetanus and other diseases that could have been prevented had there been access to vaccines. And I've seen outbreaks in this country because of parents losing faith in the safety of vaccines.

I can think of nothing we do in pediatrics that has had as much immediate proven benefit to children's health as getting them vaccinated fully and on time. Yet this study catalyzed the loss of trust some parents have in vaccines and, to some extent, in their doctors.

Who is to blame? Clearly Wakefield, but the blame shouldn't stop there. The co-authors had a responsibility to ensure that the information presented in the study was factual. The journal had a responsibility to more thoroughly review a paper presenting such a novel theory. The public health community should have taken the concerns more seriously and launched more intensive education efforts early on.

When it comes to vaccines, there is a paradox. When an infectious disease is rampant and people see it daily, vaccines are viewed with awe. The arrival of the polio vaccine in the 1960s was a great example. Parents no longer needed to fear that their children would become paralyzed by this "summer" disease. But when a disease like polio comes under control because of a vaccine against it, some parents question whether the vaccine is worth it.

We live in a very small world. As vaccine coverage here declines, we become more vulnerable to diseases resurging, but it is much harder for people to care and worry about a disease they do not see.

So what now? It's hoped this report can help to reassure new parents that vaccines do not cause autism. Study after study that tried to verify Wakefield's hypothesis found no connection between vaccines and autism. Scientifically, the issue has been laid to rest.

Convincing the general public of the safety of vaccines is a task that may fall to those experts who take up the cause in the popular media. Two newly released books offer a look at the rise of the anti-vaccine movement. Dr. Paul Offit, chief of the Section of Infectious Diseases at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, analyzes the rise of vaccine fears in "Deadly Choices: How the Anti-Vaccine Movement Threatens Us All." And journalist Seth Mnookin explores the influence of Wakefield and other leaders of the anti-vaccine movement in "The Panic Virus: A True Story of Medicine, Science and Fear."

For parents who have autistic children and believe that vaccines were the cause, I don't think this investigation will change anything. Until science can unravel the causes of autism and how to cure or prevent it, it will be hard to change these beliefs. Thankfully, though, more dollars are being spent on autism research now than ever before. I hope answers will be forthcoming. The tragedy is that for so long, research was focused down the wrong path, stimulated in large part by a fear of vaccines that stemmed from a fraud.

This Wakeman prick should be in jail for the manslaughter of dozens of children in the UK and US. Along with Oprah and that waxed twat McCarthy.

My grand mother was crippled and in a wheel chair her whole life because of polio. Vaccines wiped that disease out. When I was a kid in the 1970's you got your shots and never questioned it and believed the doctor and the medical institutions were the good guys helping society.

Today it's flipped 180 degrees. Nobody trusts anyone. Before 911 if you said terrorists would fly airliners into the World Trade Center you would be laughed at. I remember when I was in high school we were joking that in the future, kids would decline to the point where they would shoot up the school. Now it happens and in the early 80's it was the most far off absurd thing we could dream up.

So now any crazy thing is possible. Fill the vaccines up with something that will dumb you down or slow kill you, cook up a scare that allows the government to make the shots mandatory and off we go. It sounds paranoid as hell but it's also a sign nobody trusts institutions any more.

No it's a sign that a minority of people need to get a fucking grip of themselves and stop this deluded paranoid garbage.

It's not even Darwinian whereby more stupid/paranoid people's kids die needlessly because these fucks screw up the herd immunity for everyone.

This douchebag Wakefield may have been out for his own agenda, but that doesn't solve the question of where the increase in autistic children are coming from, nor whether toxic shit like mercury in vaccines is doing damage.

I had all the usual vaccines when I was a kid. Worst side effect I can remember was a sore arm for a week or two from the tetanus shot, and I honestly can't say if that was the vaccine, or an incomptent moron jabbing me with the needle. I just remember the arm being useless for a while, and that probably shouldn't have been the case. Even so, it wasn't long term damage. But these things ARE happening today, and something is obviously causing it.

Dunno if you have something equivalent to the FDA in the UK, or if yours is corrupted by the pharmaceutical industry as ours is, but it's no exaggeration to say there simply isn't the kind of oversight of these drugs & vaccines as there once was, because the fucking drug pushers have too much control of the process.

Maybe they're just diagnosing it now rather than just place general terms on such conditions like calling them "touched?"

Things are coming to screeching halt because the level of general distrust is too high. Too much corruption in everything. So this breeds paranoia. Also, there is very little real leadership anymore. It's just speculators and opportunists who really don't give a rats's ass about community or quality of life.

All these government agencies are in bed with the big corporations. We need a decent president with some balls to get these under control or they are just going to make more of them so the corporations can have more control over our lives. I mean there's a place for some of these agencies. The FDA was started because food processing and handling conditions were full of filth, rot, and rats. If there was no FCC, the airwaves would be total chaos with everyone transmitting on any band and frequency they wanted to and the radio would become broadcasts, over lapping and interupting each other. The content would be freak show quality.

You do need a certain amount of policing for the public good but now it's just thuggery for the corporations.

Spot on - it is exactly that simple.

It's just definition. Until Rain Man no one was fucking autistic. Talking shit about vaccines is like saying that parents watching Rain Man can give their kids autism.

Also just a couple of other factoids.

Every fucker on the planet has mercury in their body - get used to the idea.

Even if vaccines gave kids autism which they obviously don't but even if they did it would still be criminally negligent to not get your kids vaccinated because the risks of the other diseases are so much worse.

The answer is to get kids properly educated in science and how to filter the bullshit from the truth from all the information they are hit with.

Science changes as well. What was once considered truth in the past in now considered false. We have the best government that money can buy and and in some cases, we have the best science journals money can buy.

We have the best science Exxon/Mobile and BP can buy.

Lately, science seems to favor high energy prices and monopoly control on who controls the energy.
