WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama, trying to reassure a worried nation, declared Thursday that "harmful levels" of radiation from the Japanese nuclear disaster are not expected to reach the U.S., even as other officials conceded it could take weeks to bring the crippled nuclear complex under control.

The situation remains dangerous and complicated at the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi reactors in northeastern Japan, U.S. officials said.

"We've seen an earthquake and tsunami render an unimaginable toll of death and destruction on one of our closest friends and allies in the world," Obama said in brief remarks at the White House after a visit to the Japanese Embassy to offer his condolences.

They just need to build state of the art coal power plants. I have a friend working on his PHD he's doing his dissertation on clean coal. There is all sorts of technology there that makes the whole coal combustion process cleaner. It's a hell of a lot less damaging than fracking wells for natural gas. A coal plant also doesn't contaminate the soil and air with cesium and radiation if shit happens.

Well up to the this "new" revolution of "clean coal"...this was the past reality:

"The real enemy is coal. As I point out in my articles on coal. By burning 4.6 billion tons of coal in 2005, 20000 tons of Uranium and thorium were released into the air. So if the terrorists call themselves coal companies, and provide inexpensive power then we ignore the equivalent of 80 one ton "dirty nuclear" bombs going off every day. The nuclear industry had some relatively small accidents. 50 dead in Chernobyl. None dead in Three mile island. 4000 sick from Chernobyl. Coal mining kills 10000 every year. 24000 people in the US alone die 14 years prematurely from coal related pollution. In china, 2 million people have lung disease from coal. There is at best a 15% 5 year survival rate for lung cancer. 85% of those people are dead in 5 years. 350,000 dead per year. So globally we are looking at over 600,000 dead per year from coal. Nuclear deaths are potential and feared deaths.

Coal plants in normal operation (no accident needed) spread more nuclear material than nuclear plants. Carbon sequestering costs $100-300 per ton of carbon now and they hope to get it down to $15/ton in 2015. Carbon plants are tossing out about 1 billion of the 6 billion tons of carbon that humans make each year."

Many years ago I said you have to look at it over time.....black lung disease ect.....so one nuclear accident every 30 years makes it's spike felt...but coal over time has killed massive amounts of people.

So want your medicine in one big accident occasionally or just long slow deaths every year?

Will be nice when we are done with fossil fuels period and onto Hydrogen ect....

I agree. It's no joking matter. If that plant totally went up in smoke, it would render a huge area of Japan an uninhabitable wasteland.
