I actually have a book, Flyboys!, by James Bradley that essentially recounts the horrors of Japanese occupation of places like China, and the fact that some drunken Japanese officers killed American aviator prisoners in order to force their men to ritualistically cannibalize their remains. He then counter-poses this by reprinting and old yellow journalist political cartoon that unapologetically shows U.S. troops massacring a Filipino village circa 1903 or so, while essentially cheering and applauding atrocities without the slightest hint of irony or sarcasm...

It takes a lot to beat the British Opium wars though when Britain like the US now, had a balance of payments problem with China and decided to solve it by dumping a couple of hundred tons of heroin on them. When they objected saying it was illegal Britain attacked, killed lots of them and grabbed Hong Kong for 150 years.

Maybe if at school we were taught the shitty things our country did in the past rather than the flag waving shit we would be better equipped to understand how other countries view us.
