The filibuster was set up and intended so a party in control of the House, Senate, and White House couldn't run roughshod and dominate the government. See? Our system truly DOES have a system of checks and balances.

If Obama wants to get something thru Congress, he'll have to make it palatable to both houses of Congress, just like Bush and Clinton had to do. Either that, or he can cheat the system like he did with the Obamacare vote.

That may be the intended definition, but it's not how the current Republican congressional membership is using it....

And when the Senate Majority leader is a spineless coward like Daschle or Reid, that doesn't help matters either.

The government is in such a shambles no business can even make a five year plan because they have no idea what their taxes are going to be. The only city in the US that has any kind of housing industry left is the greater Washington DC area because the government is growing and hiring people. That is unsustainable. Plus, we have $14 trillion of debt and that is growing over $1 trillion a year. Trust me. The economy isn't going to recover for a very long time. Japan bailed their too big to fails out and their stock market never recovered in twenty years. Why would we be any different? If we would have just let the banks fail things would have been very bad for three or four years and then the reputable banks would have taken over the assets of the failed banks and we would have been pulling out of the slump by now. I don't care what the professors in the universities say, Keynesian economics never works long-term.

This decade in the US will be a lost decade and we will see if the next one will be as well. It's all about incompetent people trying to hang onto their jobs more than it is about anyone fixing anything. Bernanke is pulling a clever trick of printing money and giving it to the big banks and they trade the money amongst themselves and drive the stock market up; meanwhile they don't loan outside of that system. It makes them money and it avoids hyperinflation but it's all contrived. There is no real free market economy right now. I mean you can make inflation even profitable if you get your money first convert it and come in later and buy things cheap. I think this is what they are setting up to do or have tried to do. Looking at the Baltic Dry Index shipping is way down meaning Asian exports are way down meaning they aren't accepting US dollars for finished goods like they were. The fed might have lost it's key foreign financing and might just be using gimmicks to prop itself up. There will be no recovery as long as the Fed continues it's current monetary policy.
Don't you remember when you were a middle-aged man during the Great Depression? Things got better then, right?

Oh it will get better after a very long-time. This one will take longer to pull out of than the Great Depression because it is a far worse situation than the Great Depression was. We are going to have to write off a lot of debt worldwide and doing that is going to get interesting. Right now the people who caused all that debt are in power and want to stick us with it for generations. Right now they are stealing left and right to keep their ponzi schemes going and even trying to flank constitutional law by just clamping down with force.

Europe and the US have been hijacked by some very scummy technocrats that want to stay in power and will do anything to keep it. There won't even be the begining of a recovery until those people are out of power. We are still sinking.

It's harder to do now. Obamacare was passed before the country was pissed off. We are pissed now and the members of congress are feeling the heat. They are going to want to stay in office and when the public isn't happy and threatens to vote them out, they are less likely to rubber stamp a yes vote on legislation they never bothered to read. The country was still asleep then, it's awake now.
