Israel’s skinny model ban: New law requires body mass index of 18.5 or a doctor’s note

The fashion industry has long debated the use of ultrathin models. Now lawmakers in Israel are attempting to ban them.

A new law passed on Monday requires that male and female models in Israel must have a body mass index (or BMI, a measure of weight proportionate to height) of no less than 18.5—a standard used by the World Health Organization—or a note from a doctor saying they are not underweight before they can be hired for a modeling job. A six-foot-tall model, for example, must weigh no less than 136.5 pounds.

The legislation also bans use of models who "look underweight," and creators of ads must disclose whether they used Photoshop or graphic programs to manipulate images to make the models look skinnier.

Lawmakers are hoping the measure encourages a healthier body image among teens and fights the spread of eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia. According to a study cited by the Associated Press, 2 percent of girls aged 14 to 18 in Israel have eating disorders.

"Beautiful is not underweight," Rachel Adato, one of the lawmakers who voted for the bill, told Reuters. "Beautiful should not be anorexic."

Adi Barkan, a top modeling agent in Israel who helped Adato craft the law, described underweight models favored by the fashion industry a bit more bluntly.
"They look like dead girls," Barkan told the AP.

...I think it'd be awesome if they all looked like the girls on the "Female Fitness Model" page...y'know, like they could kick your ass... but you'd like it...YMMV

That is stupid. Just allow the skeletors to go on about their business. If they are starving, it is their own business.

Problem with that is that children are starving themselves because they think that's how women are supposed to look. Would you say the same if your daughter was anorexic? I think not...

Didn't Clinton try the same back in 1996 with the whole heroin chic model look?

If Israeli lawmakers wanted to make a diffy in eating disorders among it's "vast" female population, why not go for better nutritional standards and ban half of their fast food establishments? I mean, if government is going to intervene in how you can look now why not go all out? Anyway, in the meantime, look for more and more ultrathin Jewish Princesses coming to New York or L.A.

They are not starving - most models live on a restricted, down to the calorie high protein diet. Whether what the fashion industry exploits in these women many of them do it on the principle of money of becoming an "elite" model. Giselle was reported bankrolling in over what, 45 million a year between contracts and endorsements? About 1/3 more then her hubby makes? Some of these girls by the time they are 21 (yes, 21) are multimillionaires. Mona Johannesson, who I think is probably one of the world's most beautiful women is also one of the richest in Europe at 26, she is beyond financially set for life (and a few lifetimes over). Modeling isn't about fame anymore as it is fortune. It's why they do it and if you need to be ultrathin to achieve it then that's what many of them are going to do. You can't "ban" someone's weight.

The UN, Israel, the US. All now love to find a problem. Obesity. Being too thin or whatever and use it as an excuse to try and ram more laws, taxes, fees, and regulations down our throats. Whatever happened to leading by example, issuing a challenge, and inspiring people to fix some of these problems on their own. Now they just say we have a problem and we are going to MAKE you conform.

Folks the western world is ran by right out control freaks and the UN is center to their hub. It's all about them because we are too stupid to take care of ourselves.
