Newly Found Reagan Journal Reveals the Former President Regretted Becoming Republican

Newly Found Reagan Journal Reveals the Former President Regretted Becoming Republican
    March 25, 2012
    By Sarah Wood

Just last week, a new journal written by former President Ronald Reagan was revealed and released to the public through the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, CA. Inside the journal was a passage many were not expecting to find. It seems the former president had an incredible amount of doubt surrounding his switch from Democrat to Republican in 1962. He felt at the time that his switch was imperative because his views were becoming more and more in line with that of Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon, but he still felt very strongly towards Franklin D. Roosevelt and the need for a collective good.

His journal revealed this passage from an entry dated 8/25/2002:

Although at the time I felt I could more effectively get my ideas of a collective philosophy accomplished as a Republican more so than a Democrat, I realize now that the Republican Party was indeed the party of purely individual rights, not the Democrats. When I worked as the president of the Screen Actors Guild I understood the need for people to stick together for the greater good to get their goals accomplished. I admired other great presidents of the past such as Franklin Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower who knew that in order for the nation to thrive, we must all thrive. I am also saddened that the Republican party of today thinks I wanted God in the White House and to rule the nation. That is not true at all, after I was nearly assassinated I wanted God more in my own personal life. I acknowledged that I was to be here for a reason and serve him and my nation together, but they always stayed separate in my mind just as in the Constitution. The Republican party today merely just uses God as a means to get votes, and I don’t believe Jesus would want to be used as a marketing tool. I regret my decision to become Republican and if I had to do it all over again I would have remained in the Democratic party and ran on their ticket. They seem to instill the core values I believe in, such as a collective philosophy. I thought for a while the Democrats left me, because we used to agree on so much, it turns out that I did indeed leave them, and I would do anything to take it all back. Now as I sit here as an old man, I can only imagine, “what if…”

This new revelation is not being accepted with open arms by the Republican Party. Many are saddened to find out how their former beloved “ultra-conservative” president truly felt in his last years on earth. He also revealed in his journal that he voted for Al Gore in the 2000 Presidential Election. He said, “I just can’t bring myself to vote for that kid, I knew what he was like when I had his dad as my vice president, and I couldn’t allow for a man like that to lead the nation.”

The Reagan Library says that it has discovered several other texts by the former president, but with respect to his family and legacy, will hold them under lock and key.

I kind of doubt it's him.

I mean, wasn't Reagan kept out of the limelight past the 1990's due to how bad his alzheimers were?

It's not to say I disagree with his points. In fact, I'm in pretty much smack dab in line with him on this letter. The GOP hitching it's wagon to the moral majority train is stupid. Faith is something that is personal, and something that you keep between you and god, NOT USED FOR PUBLIC POLICY.

"Ultra-conservative"? I NEVER thought that, I knew he raised taxes, increased the size of the government, gave amnesty to three million immigrants and spent too much money. BUT I think he was a great man, and a great President even though I lean towards individual rights.

The comments above concerning religion and the "Moral" Majority crowd are spot on. It's one of the myriad of reasons the Republican party has lost me, their ideas about legislating faith are Constitutionally no different than what the Taliban does.

I say it's probably true. Reagan actually was a complicated man who was hard to pin down. Hindsight being 20/20 the Republican Party had become a cess pool in the 1980's and Reagan had some real crooks on his staff. You had that snake George H.W. Bush as vice president probably getting away with a lot of things behind the president's back.

Ronald Reagan was the only president I ever got to meet. He was super friendly and even with all the security put you at ease. He had that magic to him.

I always liked this bit he did at the Frank Sinatra roast.

It sounds like Tricky Dick didn't like the grove that much.

Well, I can respect the fact that he admitted he was wrong, and realized that he helped create the hideous monster that is today's Repuke party.

And he had good taste in jelly beans. But as far as me becoming a fan, not likely. Whether Ronnie regretted it or not, the damage is done to the country, and it's all been downhill from there

He was a dangerous useless cunt idiot.

We got lucky and it didn't end up with him getting us all killed.

This reinvention of history that goes on with that fuckwit and his twisted mentally ill wife is quite depressing. It's kind of like what used to happen in Russia with Stalin.

Although to be fair to Ronnie at least he was quite good at acting with monkeys.

Like Obama and Bush, Reagan had someone's hand up his butt. The thing is The Gipper was a loose cannon at times and drove one of his controllers Don Regan nuts. Like Bush Jr. once he rolled into Washington he was over his head. Unlike Bush Jr., Reagan could put on a good show. The man wasn't fully in charge of his presidency and that was clear. Reagan was too nice and easily manipulated to the point where his wife stepped in.

That does seem awfully lucid of him to be written in '02...wasn't he basically a vegetable by then?

(Not that I wouldn't love for him to have admitted the error of his ways once seeing what the GOP had become, or that he "couldn't bring himself to vote for" W.... )

People with alzheimers do have periods where they can be quite lucid, but I'm wary of this "newly found" journal...
