The voters who don't understand the cultural context of the dog thing would be the same ones who are still bitching about Obama being "born in Kenya", so there's no big loss there.
I'm not endorsing the practice of eating dog, but it's very common in parts of Asia. Some friends of mine went to a restaurant in north eastern China that had dog on the menu. They weren't the least bit interested in trying it, but apparently the locals still eat it.
I can't understand it myself, but then I wouldn't want to explain how good a barbecued steak is to a Hindu either, or explain to an Orthodox Jew how bacon and cheese really improve a burger. They were brought up to think of such things as repugnant, just as you or I would think of throwing Lassie on the grill.
