There is a lot of confusion in this thread between the EU and the Euro.

The EU is a free trade area which is becoming more and more like a confederation.

The euro is a currency which 17 out of the 27 countries in the EU use, the UK isn't one of them.

Even if the euro fails the EU will continue and the UK will stay in it because half our trade is with the EU and to try and export into it would add all sorts of tariffs.

The UK is broke and has no industry. It's got some of the world's best universities and some well educated people but it no longer has the empire.

You hear the UK has no industry thing a lot but it's still #7 or #8 in the world for manufacturing and still has an economy in the top 8.

Largely bogus factoid, as it was the largest recession since the The Great Depression and one could argue Obama's Admin actually prevented it from becoming a true depression. Secondly, while not a true recession, the post-Vietnam War economic malaise that troubled the U.S. from the early 1970's all the way until Reagen's second term was also a slow, tepid mess...
