I have a gut feeling that the author was never even a SEAL to begin with. He was probably just some boatswain from an Ammo ship more than likely.

No. He was a SEAL and was well-regarded in his unit according to his former comrades. They do not approve of the book, nor was he in the same area of the compound with the SEALs who shot Bin Laden and he saw the body postmortem which makes some of his more controversial statements a tad bullshit...
