When was the last time you went to the grocery store?

Drought has hit this country hard....food prices, regardless of fuel....is getting the fuck job right now....besides the bacon shortage...lol...milk in some places has doubled....and again is now higher per gallon than gas. People in the midwest have not seen rain for a coon's age.

I agree factory farming has it's place in the blame pie, but irrigation is something the midwest usually never feels.....they are going to feel it now. Even just simple crops were dying. Out in the west of the US we always think of water first. Midwest farmers are new to the "New World Order" of no water. Dustbowl had other convergent causes....but....ouch...not good for food production this year in the nation that in many ways feeds the world.

It may have gone up a little but it's at historic lows. I bet your grandparents spent a lot more than 6% of income on food.

Considering our recent series on out-sized food spending, that might sound like a good thing. But it's not.

Do you never stop and wonder how a whole chicken can be raised to adulthood, slaughtered, prepared, transported to your local store and then sold to you for $6 in such a way that everyone in that supply chain still managed to make a profit...

Water is going to be the big thing in the future...

Water use for a single serving

Totals for a diet containing meat (per day)

The world will be vegetarian in a 100 years time max.

You did take into account that the Earth's surface is 71% covered in water and falls from the sky for free everyday... somewhere.

At present we use over 50% of every drop of fresh water.

Changing seawater into fresh water takes huge amounts of energy.

If people in poorer countries continue to eat more meat we will be in trouble.

Hmmm I think I'll need to research this further... but water used to a certain extent returns back to within the eco-system. Plus the chemical binding process that forms water continues to occur naturally... So I assume it's not that much of a finite resource. But I could be wrong...

It's pretty finite on the planet as a whole. It does go around in circles but that's what I meant by the 50% thing.

We use 50% of the cycle at the moment.

You are. Water's going to be the resource wars will likely be fought over in the future. C'mon, didn't you see the last 007 movie?

believe those statistics were put out in 2009. Generally, 3 years does not make a huge difference...but the last 2 years have been killer in the US as far as crops go...and this year also played hell w/ the surrounding countryside and wildlife. Believe that if new stats were put out, they would show a major difference....(also keeping in mind that MANY of us don't come anywhere close to the "national Average" of $32,051)

Going away back to the original topic I'm listening to a BBC interview on their weekly stats program(I know I'm a nerd).

They went to the people that came up with the original figure that Mitt quoted, the independent tax policy center.

                                Some facts they said.

It was actually 46% not 47%.

Of those 46%, 60% work and so pay payroll taxes.

Of the remainder half are elderly who have worked.

His idea that poor Americans never vote Republican is also bullshit.

                                The man is a Moroni...
