When I was a little kid I had an american flag and left it out on the lawn in the front yard. The guy across the street who was a B29 bomber pilot during WWII rang the doorbell and he had the flag in his hands and he looked really pissed. I got the big lesson on not to leave the flag laying on the ground and he showed me how to fold it and all the protocols.
When I went into Boy Scouts where they teach you all that stuff I already had it down.
When you fuck up as a kid and some pissed off adult sets you straight, it burns it into your head. You never forget it. He went into what the flag meant to him and told some stories about flying bombing missions over Japan. I got a bit teary eyed like people who have been through a war sometimes do.
