Nah, I wouldn't have any problem using The Onion as a source.

Most my teachers and professors wanted a mix of sources used. Most wanted the paper to be as objective as possible. They really wanted you to do groundwork research and really dig. Some would give you bonus points if you actually arranged and did an interview yourself.

Nobody should be quoting a news channel for a source anyway, at least not for a term paper. Not FAUX, not MSNBC, not the Onion, or any other.

It's been years since I had to write a term paper, but when I did, I remember having to actually read something. Maybe an actual newspaper or some magazine like Time or Newsweek, if the subject was any sort of current news.

The least they could do now, is read the online version of those publications.

My news writing professor called the people on network news "Airheads". He was an old school newspaper man when investigative reporting was investigative reporting. I learned a lot from him actually.

Most instructors would frown on using television news for a source. Mine were strict. If you used Money magazine instead of Barrons', The Wall Street Journal, or The Economist you would hear about it.

I'm glad those days are over. I had to write a ton of research papers, do huge projects, and presentations. The worst were the group projects when you couldn't get everyone together. The object was to teach us how to work in teams. Well in the real business world everyone is at work and you get paid for it. It's impossible to replicate that in the academic setting when everyone has other obligations than just that one class. Trying to get everyone's schedule together was a bitch.

Actually a lot of studies have been done that show Fox News is the least biased of the major networks (at least up to December 2011 when I stopped watching). If you remove Hannity & Oreilly from the equation it would look a lot better. Those shows are what are giving it the extreme right lean.

But to be honest I stopped watching just over a year ago and am glad. I don't watch any TV news. I got my am radio in the car & what i find online. (and here)

If you can't tell the political leanings of the reporters or new readers then it's probably legitimate news. As soon as you can tell who those people are going to vote for, then it's propaganda. News investigates a story and does it's best to tell us the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How and nothing more. As soon as personal opinion comes in it's an editorial and not news. If lies, bias, trickery and persuasion come in, it's propaganda and not news.

There is very little news anymore; especially on television.

Any University student now has access to every scholarly journal there is...that's all they should be using as sources for research. This is my 3rd year and I think I used a news media source once...and that was to demonstrate the misleading information they were providing.

I graduated from college before the internet was widely available and search engines were the norm. It was go to the library for research. Very limited from what is available today. I was doing a paper for a production management class on quantitative statistical quality control. It was the 80's and that was all the rage. Japan was the big boy on the block then. Anyways, the article that had all the best data for the kind of paper I was writing was in Playboy. LOL!

I tried to avoid using Playboy as a source but there was some key information in the article I just had to use so I used it chancing a possibility of offending the professor. When I got my paper back I got a good grade and Playboy was circled and written in red ink was,"Tell me you didn't look at the pictures too." LOL!

I wrote one paper on a topic that hasn't had a lot of scholarly articles available my first year. I think my shoulder is still fucked from carrying the 20 books from the library that I used for my research. For this reason alone I am glad I'm at school now.

The more you watch Faux News, the more you money you put in that cunt named Rupert Murdoch's pocket.

Oh shit dude, I don't know and I'm not gonna spend my morning searching for independent links so I can pull a "see?! I told you!" in a post. I have seen studies where they look at the negative things said about Obama vs positive vs coverage on other candidates & stories that shows a clear bias in the media.

Megan Kelly = quality & mostly balance/fair news person.

Shep Smith = most awesome news guy on the air today. Hard not to like that guy. He is very blunt & doesn't try to be pc. Surprised he hasn't been fired yet.

Brett baier = Extremely fair & unbiased journalist in the truest sense of the word.

OK great, so that's their core anchors. Now the rest is pretty much unwatchable.

Fox & friends makes me sick to my stomach with their sheer stupidity. In fact I asked them about their bias & their exact quote was "of course all our news is by us".

Hannity & Oreilly are shills that flat out refuse to listen to any opposing view from someone that can actually for a decent argument.

The Five? - That's the show you must watch while in hell. Greg Gutfeld is the only 1 in the group stomachable and he tries wayyyyyy too hard to be smart & intelligent (Dennis Miller-esque but Miller doesn't force it or script it)

So please don't think I am a Fox fan blindly. I like a few anchors a lot & fucking hate the rest. They really need to break into two. One for headline news & one for the talk shows like CNN Headline & CNN.

Am watching Faux right now. But it is not the news, it is the Daytona 500.

A scrolling text thing appeared at the top of the screen just now saying DirecTV was going to stop carrying Faux on March 1. I assume due to some contract dispute.

But I really do not care. The only reason I ever watch that channel is if there is some sporting event on it that I want to see (like the Daytona 500).

As I am getting a Roku box soon, I am not so worried about it. I can always watch what I want through the net if I must see it.

I never watched Faux News anyway. I watch one of the big 3 networks each day to see what the official line is on stuff (as promoted by the government), then I just dig around on the net to find the real dirt.
