Since marriage deals with love and the romantic bond between two people it's pretty foolish to think government can define that. What defines it is tradition. Marriage for the most part has been defined as a covenant between a man and a women where they decide they want to be partners and establish a household. Entering a marriage contract basically said you were not going to chase any nookie outside of the relationship, you were obligated to take care of the resulting offspring, and your spouse would get your inheritance so it established an estate. Marriage also became a social control mechanism. Religions required that you get married in their church to another member. Races required you married another person within that race.

The concept of gay marriage is new. You are taking a concept that has only been openly discussed for a very short time and putting it up to a concept that is thousands of years old. Whether gay marriage will be a lasting concept remains to be seen.

What is the role of government in this? Well marriage is a covenant. It's a contract. Government simply enforces the contract. If Bill cheats on John and John divorces Bill, then John should get half of Bill's gross assets unless they signed a prenuptial agreement. The government deals with that sort of thing.

Some say gay marriage will bring society down. What brings a society down is not replacing itself. If you don't have offspring you die off. You need men and women making babies and raising them right to have the next generation that will drive the economy. Children are best raised in a family situation where they have a father and a mother. Most of today's ills can be directly linked to a degeneration of the family unit. The groups of people with the most problems seem to have the most broken homes. Most of this destruction was not caused by homosexuals. It was caused by heterosexuals behaving badly and ditching responsibility.

Love is beyond any government. If you choose to have a civil union because of that love, then all the government really can do is enforce the contract you enter into. Marriage is beyond a civil contract. I think the debate is on what you can have a civil union with. Loyd's of London will insure almost anything. Some people want to have a civil union with almost anything. The guy that marries his dog is smart. The dog isn't going to sue him over half his gross assets. The dog isn't going to know it's being cheated on. But you can file your taxes as married filed jointly and get a tax break.
