Stealing of classified information and the associated caveats of Snowden's security clearance disqualify him from whistleblower status. If it qualified effectively every spy could legally be a double agent. There are very specific laws for CIA/NSA agents to follow and are known and accepted as part of employment. All agents make that choice and understand why and that it can save their life. Snowden does not know what he doesn't know and hence the ramifications of what he discloses. That is by design and he knows that but did it anyway because he felt he was right. Others however will be comprised because of him and they and their families did not make that choice. Part of Snowdens rationale was no one should be above the law, a noble view. However by being a fugitive and violating his oath he is putting himself outside the law and actively evading the law which he cites as his justification.

If you don't have very many decent investigative reporting plus new government powers to block them then you need whistle blowers.Comment

We do have an abundance of "media" but true journalists are increasingly rare. Whistleblower is a legal status, intelligence officers just are not afforded that due to national security and in fact you sign those rights away when you join, but broadly whistleblower is something good for society.Comment

Kinda like when when right wingnuts who want no govt. involvement in anything infringing on personal freedom and choice unless of course it is to engineer laws on abortion and gays then full government involvement please. Same damn coin just opposite sides and why neither extreme contributes ever to real solutions.
