In colonial times yes. America today is one big mixing pot. People have migrated here from other places than just the british isles.
No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!

I think what you saw with the chair thing was an old man who's a couple sandwiches short of a picnic, and a party of assholes taking advantage of him.

It's true that Eastwood is a registered Republican and held office under that party, but this was Mayor of Carmel California, which is not exactly some bastion of right wing teabagging insanity like Orange County.

Carmel is just south of Monterrey and Pebble Beach. This is an area where the gas stations were charging $3.50/gallon for gasoline back in the late 1990s when the rest of the country was still paying $1.79... because they were too rich to give a shit, and only vote Republican for tax reasons, not because they believe in extremist ideology. Not to mention most of the vehicles filling up at this station were probably golf carts rather than SUV's so they probably didn't even notice the totals as they put it on their AMEX black cards.

He's still working and making some decent stuff so he can't have gone totally Reagan/McCain yet.

Old people seem to struggle to keep their shit together at a point.

I wonder if it's something to do with how quickly time passes when you get older, they seem to get to a point where they hate change. It's conservatism with a small c. My old man is a very nice kind empathetic guy so I was stunned recently to hear his views on gay marriage. He coined an amazing line of 'How much more equality do they need?'.

They need to have an age limit and get rid of the minimum age to be president. Electing old farts who have one foot in the grave already isn't a good idea. If they have nothing to live for they might not give a shit about the long term consequences of their actions. If we elect younger presidents they might think twice before starting something if it might lessen their life expectancy.
