Modern gasoline engines have a maximum thermal efficiency of about 25% to 30% when used to power a car. In other words, even when the engine is operating at its point of maximum thermal efficiency, of the total heat energy released by the gasoline consumed, about 70-75% is rejected as heat without being turned into useful work, i.e. turning the crankshaft.[1] Approximately half of this rejected heat is carried away by the exhaust gases, and half passes through the cylinder walls or cylinder head into the engine cooling system, and is passed to the atmosphere via the cooling system radiator.[2] Some of the work generated is also lost as friction, noise, air turbulence, and work used to turn engine equipment and appliances such as water and oil pumps and the electrical generator, leaving only about 25-30% of the energy released by the fuel consumed available to move the vehicle. No! Wrong, Notro...
I understand in great detail how a combustion engine works...
I'm an active mechanic in my working life as well as my free time, and I've taken all sorts of classes...
When I say efficient, I mean in comparison to any other technology or alternative energy source, so far...
And that quote (sans link) is old...
Modern efficiency in an automobile is around 35% these days and getting better...
Heat, friction and turbulence are factors that will effect any alternative energy source...
And when you factor in reliability, nothing can touch a modern gas or diesel engine...Comment

So a lot of these SUV's are fake. It wouldn't take much to break one on a fairly sane off road situation. It's all because some people who used to only drive sedans and sports cars liked being up high and having the power. Most probably hardly ever even drive on a dirt road. They got a taste of redneckville and went crazy.
In London they are called Chelsea tractors and people buy fake mud sprays to pretend they use them at the weekend to do outdoor stuff.
My main objection apart from what Imapuss said is that they don't have to follow the same safety rules as other cars which means their fenders are too high and also they don't crumple so that if one hits you on the side it's chassis is going to kill you or your kids. Worst are the bull bars which are pedestrian killers.
I'm talking about urban drivers I have no problem with them being used in the way that they were originally meant.Comment
