“She said, ‘You know, if you’re going to be involved in politics you have to grow skin as thick as a rhinoceros,’” she told an audience of female political activists, according to the New York Daily News.

They would if it was their time to win. Some higher power decides who's going to win and it goes from there. It's not a competion. They make a half assed effort to make it look like one but it really isn't. Otherwise the dems would have trotted out a better candidate that John Kerry when W was up for reelection. There is no two party system. Politics are phonier than professional wrestling.
Kerry wasn't the most likeable candidate in the world but he repeatedly destroyed Bush in those. Of course when you think about it the only people who still haven't made up their minds by the time of the debates in the US presidential elections are a bit stupid anyway...Comment

Most folks are not represented well by a single party. You have a large voter base in the middle or slightly to one side that is often socially liberal and fiscally conservative. The right too often wants someone to be a cultural warrior and fight battles that frankly have been long lost or simply irrelevant to most people's everyday lives. The left alienates business and entrepreneurs by often talking at them and not understanding how economic consequences while focusing on their own set of issues that are near to their heart but not necessarily impacting everyday life of the average working too much with kids family. Both parties consistently show an inability to balance the books or take on hard issues like entitlement reform or campaign finance reform etc...
That typically leaves candidates from either from a position too left or right of mainstream or legacy candidates who are there not because anyone loves them but they play the game dirty and are the biggest entity financially hence we get Bush v Clinton like choices. Middle of the road non legacy folks simply do not run because they see those who do and do not play dirty get destroyed so why bother. A pretty crap choice regardless of anyone's personal left or right POV.Comment
