Application of the term "Indian" originated with Christopher Columbus, who, in his search for Asia, thought that he had arrived in the East Indies. The Americas came to be known as the "West Indies", a name still used to refer to the islands of the Caribbean sea. This led to the names "Indies" and "Indian", which implied some kind of racial or cultural unity among the aboriginal peoples of the Americas. This unifying concept, codified in law, religion, and politics, was not originally accepted by indigenous peoples but has been embraced by many over the last two centuries. Even though the term "Indian" often does not include the Aleuts, Inuit, or Yupik peoples, these groups are considered indigenous peoples of the Americas.
You're right. I guess I got confused with this East Indies West Indies bologna. If he thought he was in the East Indies I wonder how he figured out he wasn't. It's not like he walked into a convenience store and bought a map. But I was correct that Indians is an acceptable term for indigenious persons of North America. Those guys are indians. The guy on the right is Geronimo.Last edited by cadaverdog; 11-13-2015, 08:19 PM.Beware of DogComment

Yes, the PC term in the USA is Native American. However, I am not in the US, am I? Up here, we have First Nations ("Indians") Inuit ("Eskimoes") and Métis (mix of First Nation and early French settlers).
In Canada, the term Indian is only used when referencing the Indian Act, which is nothing more than legislated oppression and marginalization..."Ya know what they say about angels... Don't stereotype my Native American brothers. You think all native Americans are uncivilized barbarians who lack the self control to react to anything they perceive as an insult without becoming violent. You think with forked brain paleface.Last edited by cadaverdog; 11-14-2015, 09:41 PM.Beware of DogComment

You were the one that said they'd become violent if I called them an indian not me. I happen to know a few of those fellows and none of them have ever taken exception to being called an indian. Just because the "first nation" mofos up there get pissy when they're called indians don't mean the ones here do. Casinos here owned by "native Americans" are commonly called indian casinos. Quit talking out your ass about something you know nothing about. This ain't there biatch.Beware of DogComment

Ha! ha! I used to drive a truck for a company called Savage. I caught so much crap about the name being racist and that was years ago. It had nothing to do with native americans. The last name of the guy who owned the company was Savage. Ha! ha!No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

It's probably a.larger issue here because we have more Indians than you do...and by that I mean people from India."Ya know what they say about angels...
