The result doesn't surprise me. There have been a number of factors at work: a 'fear' (largely unjustified, IMO) about immigration somehow diluting 'Britishness'; the slow economic recovery hitting tradtional working class voters whom the Labour party no-longer represent (being increasingly metropolitan) and whom UKIP were happy to pick up; and a general distancing of a political class from the public; and the fact that no-one has ever really spoken about the benefits of being in EU (the average person in the UK has no real idea of how it works or what it does).

The Remain campaign tried to win the case on economics. When people feel poor, that doesn't really work. Given the paucity of economic education in our country (and claim no expertise) employing rational arguments against emotional ones based on identity didn't work. We will now see a Tory-government lurch to the right (Cameron is actually quite liberal) in an attempt to undercut UKIP (which really has no reason to exist now). Labour should hang their heads in shame for this - their campaign was utterly piss poor. I expect that Scotland will now vote to break the union.

The next five years will be difficult.

I really think that this is about the increasing social inequality in our society. If you look at where the strongest 'out' votes were, they were not necessarily places with the most immigrants. They were often places with crushing poverty, however - there are swathes of people whom the parties just do not reach (or understand). Wales was particularly interesting: it voted out, but few places in the UK have benefitted more from EU money. A London government will not send them the same amounts, that is for sure.
