I'd say Barry got higher votes in 2008 than 2012 because he campaigned as though he were an actual Democrat. The fact that he turned out not to be one is why he had less support in 2012 (I'm on the record as being one of those).

Had Bernie been on the ballot Tuesday as he legally should have been his numbers would have been better than Barry's 2008 column.

The numbers for this election aren't in yet, but the US population of voting eligible adults in 2012 was 235,248,000. The national recorded voter turnout for that year was 129,085,403, or 54.87% of the eligible population.

So in other words, nearly half of the eligible voters don't show up in the first fucking place. Some of that is probably due to the various voter suppression scams rolled out by the right wingers in the last few election cycles, but the bulk of it is probably people who have simply given up because they don't see a choice of two right wing parties as a valid choice at all, and if they get their information from the corporate media, they probably aren't even aware of the Greens or Libertarians.

In any event, the Republican voters count for 22% of the eligible voters on a "good" day (good for them, at least). Hardly the majority of the country. So because of Shittizens United, a corporate consolidated media, and widespread voter suppression and electronic fraud, we basically have a fringe minority running the country.
