BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Workers from the Starbucks store on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo have voted 'yes' to become the first Starbucks store in the United States to unionize.

Starbucks workers from the Genesee Street store in Cheektowaga appear to have voted 'yes' to become the second store in the United States to unionize. However, several votes have been challenged that could affect the results.

Workers from the Starbucks location on Camp Road in Hamburg voted no when it came to unionization.

The workers garnered national attention in their effort to unionize, most recently with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders meeting with them and holding a town hall earlier in the week.

The vote total for unionization at the Elmwood store was 19 'yes' to eight 'no'.

Howard Schultz is a dork. Yeah he grew Starbucks but it really was bringing the Seattle styled coffee house to other areas that sold. His mistake is he grew the brand too big and cheapened it plus other competitors came in. There’s no longer anything special about Starbucks. I really think he’s over rated as a business person. He is naive in so many ways. He got lucky.

I don't know but his accountants are shit hot. That corporation pays fuck all tax to anyone anywhere in the world. It's painful watching small local cafes trying to compete with a completely shitty unfair system.

Starbucks is building more locations here. There's going to be one every mile or so down the main drag, including the one in the grocery store and the one at Target. Almost as bad as Dollar General stores.

Worse. At least Dollar General sells useful stuff if in fraudulent sizes making you think you're getting more for less when you're buying less for a bit more...

Around here they always duplicate themselves. There's a Starfucks inside the Safeway down the street, and another in the old Key Bank building across the parking lot. A mile down the road and there's one inside the Fred Meyer, another one outside in the same shopping center and a third one across the freeway. And over on the west side there's like 5 of them within a mile of each other.

Seems to me like they're competing against themselves more than the local coffee sellers... who usually have a better product.

Well, and that's the thing of it, in that I wouldn't deny the success Schultz had but none of that made me think he'd be a good president re: his walking up to running for the nomination a few times.

I'm not gonna I've never drank Starbucks or fuck Starbucks or whatever. I enjoy their Mocha Frappucino bottles you can buy in the supermarket. I buy their home blend for my coffee maker. Used to enjoy their iced coffees at the stores, although they changed their sweetener and their blend they use at the stores over the last couple years and their store blend has a slightly off taste these days.

But for me Starbucks is to coffee what McDonald's is to hamburgers. Which isn't to say I haven't eaten at McDonald's either, but I'm not confused as to what it is I'm consuming in terms of quality.

Unions aren't perfect, but to my mind CEO's oppose unions in principle for one reason only when you boil it down: unions give an opening to the grunts in the business (you know, the ones who actually DO THE WORK) making a better wage, which means less money in the pockets of the ownership segment of society. It's nothing more elegant than that. Nothing to do with unions being "communist" or "anti-American" or "anti-business" or "anti-profit"...it's just a natural reaction to someone having their rather large pockets lightened.

Also in a time when never has the gap between rich and poor been wider.

Go and have a look at the numbers. In places like the USA and UK not only have things got totally out of control social mobility has reduced massively.

What used to be called 'The American Dream' is completely fucking dead. You are way more likely to drag yourself up the tree and become rich in some european socialist country than in the US or UK these days.

Time to tighten your belts but I'm going to fuck around in spaceships.

Three people in the USA have the same amount of $ as the bottom 150 000 000. I expected as I got older to move a bit to the right which was the way things used to work but day by day I'm going the other way.

Which is actually conservative if you think about it.

I used to go to Starfucks when it wasn't a complete boring suburban cliche to do so, Mainly to stare at the hot girls in the early days of the yoga pants fad and free wifi to get shit done. But I realized that while their coffee wasn't complete shit, it was overpriced swill that was nothing special and one can get better stuff at Target or Aldis and make it at home. Now if I could get hot chicks in yoga pants to hang out in my kitchen in the morning that would be serendipity.

Plus they often didn't have the dark roast shit and I had to settle for Pike's Peak of bland fucking Donut Shop coffee that was worse than Walmart's Donut Shop Coffee...
