We can't even find average leadership although I think Biden or the State Department at least, has played Ukraine pretty well so far.

I do wonder how many Republicans can afford their yachts and dark campaign money now Putin has cut them off.

Who knows. When you have nuclear powers in a spat a senile old man probably is going to be given his ice cream and a nap while geopolitical and military experts deal with the problem.

Well I can do without Russian Standard Vodka and Beluga caviar. JJ is going to make a fortune since they are the only none Russian maker of vacuum tubes. Most the vacuum tubes are made in Russia.

How would this have made him "snap". The Ukraine has wanted to be part of NATO for over a decade now. And yes when you invade someone's territory and seize it they tend to want it back.

What made Putty "snap" was that he has a working democracy at his doorstep in a former Soviet Republic.

Russia is a tricky situation. You have an extremely large country full of nuclear weapons and to the south you have several areas you don’t want having access to such weapons.
                  What "areas" do you mean?

Gorbechev was a decent leader but he was too weak. You need a strong leader running Russia or they get ran over. It’s similar to the Middle East in this regard. Nice guys don’t last long. You really have to spend some time in Russia to understand the place. It’s very different and most people in the West don’t understand Russians.
I don't recall Gorby being "weak". My recollection is that a lot of the other nations states didn't want to be run from Moscow and he largely gave up power as the Soviet Republics were failing in every sense and Yeltsin took over the main hub of Russia and ended their empire in that era. I'm not sure Boris Yeltsin was the epidemy of strength and coherence. But the autocrats that opposed them were fossils living in a past that never really existed to begin with. But you are touching on an idea that is sort of bullshit - that Russia needs an authoritarian leader because of its large geographic land mass. But Canada has a large landmass and somehow still has a tradition of democratic elections and termed leaders. The pity here is that what the Soviet Union really needed was a gradual transition to a free market system or a variation of democratic socialism and not a sudden seizure of its assets by corrupt oligarch former communist cunts that were the corrupt overlords that destroyed whatever viability the Soviets had to begin with. And invading Afghanistan was far more detrimental to the Soviet system than ever acknowledged and Putin has just basically done vastly worse here as his army is now marooned and demoralized with rumors that they are slicing open fuel tankers to avoid fighting...

I don't agree that it's been played well... leading from behind and following the EU and UK's moves, while helpful and appropriate... seems too little, too late.

The actions taken globally should have been enacted 3 months ago to pressure Russia to not invade. While the sanctions and all that enacted this week are somewhat strong measures... they're still somewhat tepid and not as swift to impact Russia in the near term. There's plenty more options to cut-off and isolate the Russians that can and should be taken immediately by every country that opposes this atrocity. While the world is at it... let's enact the same on every country that supports Russia.

I think the sanctions are pretty tough.

I'm not sure you can punish someone with sanctions before they do the crime. We should have had the stomach to mop up a lot of this Russian corruption years ago of course.

Western intelligence has been spot on - how many people were saying that Biden was making a fuss about nothing a few weeks ago accusing him of using it as a distraction?

This just in for what it's worth:

Facebook denied access to all Russian servers. How will the MAGAs and Qtards get their "news" now?

Not many here that I associate with thought Biden was making a fuss about nothing... as the intelligence kept increasing the number and location of troops surrounding Ukraine most folks here were asking... Hey why aren't we acting now to stop this? Not after the invasion is underway.

Outside of the Washington DC gang and the mainstream media... most of the rest of the US was thinking this isn't good. Let's act quick and shut it down.

This 'mainstream media' as a pejorative term is starting to piss me off.

The argument being that because there are some special interests and media owners mainstream media is not always accurate and sometimes partisan. Yup ok fine but part 2 is 'so anything else must be better'?

Fucking no. So instead of professional highly educated journalists with training on multiple sources who are sometimes compromised we'll replace that with some random fuckwit on the internet secondary source BS because it's what we would like to believe and then makes it true?

It's getting like the great quote, there is a word for 'alternative' medicine that has been proved to work - medicine.
