Back in the day when I played my own version of a Frankenstrat and was going for the brown sound, I used a Dimarzio X2N specifically to handle the problem you're describing...
It worked great and that pickup has incredible output...
I was never one of those people who used this or that because Joe famous used it, I sorta did my own thing, still do...

well i messed with the amp a little more this morning and kind of ended in the same place with the jaguar. when stopping the feedback by muting the strrings i still get a faint buzzing sound and i think i also hear a small squeaking sound. do they still sell that pickup???Comment

well tried it out with the wolfgang and had much better control. slight buzzing sound though and i think it needs a tad bit more distortionComment

I thought the Windsor had plenty of distortion. We played it through a 5150 cab. The high gain input is straight into the the first stage valve and the low gain is buffered. I didn't like the BOOST and didn't use it. I used a Wolfgang in the high input. Max the bass to 12, dialed the trebble way back because the amp gets thin sounding with it and dialed in the mids to suit my taste. I like the amp best on full A/B and didn't care for class A much.
The key with the Windsor is to open it up and dial the gain in to suit the overall volume. A THD Hotplate is a nice thing to have. The amp has a tad of an ed at lower volumes. The Windsor likes to run.No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

I tried it with a cheap ass Epiphone Flying V. Got a classic Gibson like tone. Maybe something in the PAF territory would work.
My approach is to use fairly weak pickups and use the amp or a peddle for the dirt. I never cared for the super distortion pickups myself. No! You can't have the keys to the wine cellar!Comment

yeah i kinda dont like the boost thing either. but i will try the settings you are describing. to me at times it sounds like it has enough distortion but then it doesnt. guess im picky. i love the unchained tone which is what i kinda aim for soundwise with distortionComment

Hmmm...
Yeah, they still make the X2N...
Maybe BrownSound or Jhahe or someone might have an idea or two...
Next time I go to town i'm gonna plug into one of those things, my friend said they had one in stock...
My tone is kinda like a cross between Edward and Yngwie...
Not much distortion at all, just overdrive...
I use an ADA MP1 and I can plug that into anything...
I have several different amps including vintage Super Leads and new Hot Rod Deluxes. I can get almost the exact same tone from either one with my ADA...
I have never relied on a stock amp for my tone...
Check one out...
Here's a couple ADA sound clips...

I know, being a tone junky isn't easy...:DComment

But it gives you the general idea of what an ADA sounds like...
Here's a few more...

Actually these are clips from Voodoo amps after they do their mods to an MP1, but I don't hear much difference. The overdrive and the clean tones are very similar stock...
I've been using the MP1 since about 1990...
