Not bad guitars but good luck keeping that piece of shit tremolo in tune."I've always been academic. I've trained in martial arts since my 12th birthday. I'm debating with myself about direct-mounting a Custom-Custom in one of my guitars I'm doing a refurb on...
I know Eddie swears by it, but I haven't tried enough guitars with them installed that way to say it makes a difference to my ears.
I can see theoretically how it might improve resonance and bass response though... question is, is it a noticeable difference?
Think about it: Generally speaking, even if you do surface mount it, chances are you're going to have to use some sort of spacer for height adjustment underneath
(preferably wood, but I've heard legend of EVH jamming matchbooks under Frankie's...in which case, what's gonna transfer string vibration better: plastic or a wad of paper? :D )
I think even if I do direct mount it I'm going to put the mounting ring over it when it's done..most guitars look crappy without them IMO...Originally posted by conmee

In my honest opinion the Custom Custom, while a good sounding pickup, is geared more for the "modern" EVH tone than his vintage ones. I think there is too much output going on there to capture the old tones. Now I've heard of people bastardizing Custom Customs with a Duncan '59, by taking one of the coils off the '59 and replacing it on the Custom Custom. Supposedly this is basically what the Duncan EVH pickup is. Mismatched coils and whatnot.
I think the original Frankie pickup is more around the PAF range.Comment

Don't destroy the guitar just because Edward wasn't smart enough to properly mount a pickup properly...
