In summary, I've proven you need a gap gauge to check your first-fret height distance.

Which the kid has a necessity to check while reducing the nutblock mounting ledge, or he could file too much off without it.

I've also proved Custom Shop uses these for setups, by quoting and providing a link.

me and my pops put shims under the nut (with carefully cut holes for the screws, can't tell you how many times I cut the whole shim on accident)

You can cut shim strips from a soda can using scissors, and use a paper punch to knock out the two holes for the mounting screws.

Also if your fingerboard is unequally planed, or has a different radius than the nut is made to fit, you can double-over a shim and punch a hole for just one screw, and mount it on the side that's too high.

This trick will lower your action on the half portion of the nut that has no shim.

I'll go the coward one better. I have some brass shim stock that is .005 that I got cleaning out an old machinist's shop. It's easier to cut than soda cans, uniform in thickness, and is made for just such usage. If you want, I'll send you some for nothing.....

A quarter-inch deflection at the 14th fret? That's .250, or ten times the dimension we're talking about at first fret for clearance.
