Roth Radio Ends It's Short Run
...and CBS is Going To Pay...
Well, we'd all be kidding ourselves here at the Army if we didn't see this coming. It's not like you had to take a big gambling guess after the South Beach debacle to figure out that Roth's days as a Radio DJ for Free FM, owned by CBS, were numbered. What else is new in the ball-less world we live in. CBS is more than likely thinking a replay of the 30's classic "War of the Worlds" is the way to go. I mean fuck it...why have something original when you can smoke something you've been fucking getting cancer from over the past 30 years.
Roth's fit into radio was questionable at the start, I sure as hell won't deny that. It's not because he couldn't do it, but because most everyone knew a couple of things had to happen. First, Roth would have to be given the time to get over the Stern backlash. Most people didn't see this as a short term deal, but as something that would take a year to 18 months. Second, the base fans that were to give Roth a chance would have to expect something different, new, and intelligent. If they could work through early rough spots, Roth Radio would have a chance to flourish a bit. Well, neither things happened. CBS acted like the old, non-sexed homos they are.
Of course, I'm not deaf...nor am I that fucking biased that I didn't think Roth's show needed to grow a whole fucking lot from where it is right now.
Roth Radio wasn't very good, in that it was a bit choppy, lacked big name firepower that Stern had in the studio, and had no real direction as of yet. That, combined with the fact that Roth immediately began smashing the CBS execs, and throw in a no show as well, and you have a situation that was ready to explode. I was a fan of it, simply because it threw Roth in front of us every single day. Of course, I'm as big a Roth fan as their is on the planet...so I was bound by the code to at least give the show a shot. No, it wasn't something I would miss work to hear, but it wasn't as bad as people said it was...and it certainly would have improved. Roth is far too talented for it not to.
The show did, slowly, start to gain it's footing. Again, I'm not going to sit here and say this was the preeminent radio show in the world, but through it all, Roth did find a voice. The problem, is that the show had absolutely no format. It was, without a doubt, a freewheeling experience into Roth's head...whether he was talking about Kosher products, to Iraq, to CBS' boneheaded management, to his Uncle Manny. His show also included his own sidemen, that certainly didn't fit the normal stereotypes. Of course, when has Roth fit stereotypes. Apparently stating the time every 3 minutes, having a straight-man news guy or gal, and having a sports spot were far more important than a show that might have a bit of intelligence and ingenuity. CBS must have been surprised. It expected the spoutings of a Rock and Roll legend. Instead, it got the spoutings of someone intellectually supperior than their combined IQ. An obvious overload occured.
No, everything Roth did had the potential of working, but for certain, the show deserved a bit longer than the fucking 3-month chance it was given. Sure, Roth could have read the sponsor's ads a bit better than sounding like a muffled fart. Sure, Roth could have pushed a lot harder for mainstream guests, or even the nichy guests that Stern is so good at finding. Sure, Roth could have waited until at least the 6 month mark before calling CBS' bumbling morons...well...bumbling morons. But, that's never been Roth.
So, after the media-running, CBS decided to cut it's losses.
Fuck you CBS...and can't wait to see you get your asses handed to you in the courtroom...as Roth intimated in his last show...""I was booted, tossed, and it's going to cost somebody," Roth said. No doubt, before this is all over, Roth will receive his full $4 million dollar compensation when it's all said and done.
What's next for Roth? Your guess is as good as mine, but you can be sure of one thing...
It sure the fuck will be interesting, and more than likely involve your wife, sister or daughter.
