I am not sure, but I recall reading an article in the 80's or early 90's in which Ed comes clean about his alcoholism. He said that basically it had little to do with Van Halen's party-band image. Eddie claimed that he had a "social disfunction" in which he is extremely shy and awkward around people he doesn't know well (which sounds a lot like what former Miami Dolphins' running back Ricky Williams has). Drinking was his way to have a "bracer" before concerts. He said he started with a couple of shots of "vodka" and it gradually became a bottle of vodka as the story usually goes. But maybe he was using vodka as an example, I don't know.
