I see what you're saying, but the problem with Ed is Ed. Frankly, if Ed wants to drink himself into the grave, I say the mother fucker can knock himself out. He knows he needs the help and all he's done is surround himself by yes-men who'll enable his behavior and spin it off at any given opportunity, and YES, that means Alex too. I've known enough alcoholics in my time to know that they've got nobody but themselves to blame for their behavior, no matter how many "outside influences" they try and site in a pathetic attempt to escape personal responsibility for themselves.

Of course, Ed's a big boy. If he wants to check himself in, great. But he probably won't, so nobody's to blame for it but himself.

Frankly, I don't want David anywhere near this train wreck of a band and I hope Van Halen just fades away like a bad rash.

For some people, the tools dont work... regardless of how much they WANT to change the pattern, they cant beat it. The people in their lives need to move on. Obviously Dave has. Val has removed herself and her son from the day to day dealings with him and she has allowed wolf to maintain a supervised ralationship with his father. Ed's been been a dick for years because he's been a drunk for most of his adult life.

Agreed. I've seen alcoholism closely my entire life, and if there's one thing I've learned in all that time, it's not a "disease" and anyone who says so is just making excuses for them and enabling them.

This whole concept of it being a "disease" only encourages alcoholics to drink more because it gives them a new excuse to fall back on when their lives turn into a fucking pile of dog shit because of it and they lose everybody in their life that ever bothered to give a shit about them.

Then you have friends of drunks or people who are dating/married to them. They blow the "disease" trumpet hard to convince themselves that their partner isn't a waste. "Oh, he has a terrible disease and can't work. Yeah he beats me but it is his illness!" Horseshit!

It's not a disease, It's an addition.
If you look into it, you'll find it is one of the hardest to beat and the withdrawls of it can be life threatening. Anyway this is too persoanl of an issue fo me, so I guess I'll check out now.
