Sheepdog sammy. When he joined the group way back when I can remember thinking it was the absolute worst fucking move they could have ever made, and that my interest in Van Halen was over. This guy was a fringe-rocker/80's novelty-act walking into the biggest ass-kicking band ever. What a terrible move and the biggest travesty to what the band ever stood for. They might as well have hired Bozo as their lead singer. I don't know the guy personally, but he's proven through his own actions that he was never the right guy for the job.
Sammy Hagar

Thing that gets me is Sammy always acts like he was this huge solo success prior to joining Van Halen, and that wasn't the case. Sure, the guy had a career and wasn't a complete unknown before 1985, but I wouldn't even put him in the minor leagues in the early to mid 1980s. Biggest success he had was the VOA album.
Joining Van Halen made Hagar. Being in Van Halen made Roth, but he was there at the beginning and the formulative work he did (let's face it; Roth was the visual architect and had plenty of input sonically) in turn enabled Roth to help make Van Halen.
Hagar walked into a band that was already selling millions, and the only reason he even got the chance to walk into it in 1985 was because Roth quit.
Hagar touts the 4 Van Hagar albums going number one and the fact that Van Hagar had 9 top forty hits versus only 7 for the classic lineup (although he fails to say CVH had the only #1 top forty hit of Van Halen's entire career) as some kind of proof that Van Hagar was more successful. While even these stats would be bullshit if they were reversed as proof of anything, by his own logic he has a weak case as somehow the contrast in total album sales of the two eras slips his mind.............but you can't blame Sam. After all, he labors under the delusion that Van Hagar sold 60 million albums.
You could almost understand Ed, Al and Mike responding to Roth's barbs in the press (although the first I heard of Van Halen splitting up was in Rolling Stone, where Ed went on to call Roth an asshole and was glad that ten years of putting up with his bullshit was over), but when Sammy would jump in there and add his 2 cents on Dave, I was always wondering where Hagar even got off saying anything about Dave at all. Roth was at the peak in the mid 1980s in terms of his stardom. There were plenty of people who, when they heard who Van Halen's new singer was, went "Sammy WHO?", to which the response was, "You know, that guy from the I Can't Drive 55 video?".
If anything Hagar should have thanked Roth for helping build a band into a legendary rock force, contributing to a base of material that enabled Van Hagar to coast on and helping establish Van Halen as a household name that was bulletproof from merciless onslaughts of power ballads/poprock (for a little while anyway), and then bailing out.
Without Roth doing what he did and leaving when he did, Hagar wouldn't even rank high enough to be mentioned on a VH1 Where Are They Now? special.Scramby eggs and bacon. -
He didnt get any cooler with age either. In fact he got worse.
This 60 year old man wearing mumus and 14 year olds surf
wear.. Its a disgrace.
And his voice ??? Fucking hell ? I would much rather listen
to cats fighting in the night..
He should praise Dave's existence everyday. He owes his
life to Dave. No doubt.BABY PANA 2 IS Coming !! All across the land, let the love and beer flow !

You Know as much as an eddie van halen fan that i am . i hate to admit that the problem is not sammy hagar, its eddie. Back in 1996 when sammy left or got kicked out he stated a lot of the problems that roth had stated 10 years earlier. Eddie is the bull shiter not dave or sam. I thought the dave and sam tour was the best thing to happen because it showed the van halen sisters that they both dont need them. ok so they both dont pull in the crowds and sell the albums that they did with halen but neither did they with gary so screw it. Halen needs both of them then they need halen. its proven factComment

Thank you guys for your thoroughly valid responses and votes for me. I'm glad others feel the same that I did back in 1985. I never bought another Van Halen album again after "1984". It was the end of an era.Comment
