I have been coming to this site off and on since I first heard about it a few years ago. I was looking for classic VH sites, and this one did the trick for me. I don’t post a whole lot. I figure when you say less it means more when you finally say anything. But, I have been living a lie. I originally took the Van Halen’s side in the big VH/DLR divorce.
I am not proud. It shames me to say it now. But just put yourself in my shoes. I was 10 when I was turned on to VH. I was at my friend’s house when he snuck into his sister’s room to get one of her cassettes. He put it in his tape player and said, “Check this out.” Soon I heard the pumping of a Hammond organ thru a Marshall stack, and I was hook. This is the way it is suppose to sound, I thought. I went to my uncle, got the rest of the catalog, and by the time 1984 war released, I was in full idol worshiping mode. I was an Eddie freak. I got a job washing dishes to buy a guitar and take lessons, just like the man. Then the unthinkable happened, the break-up. I was on the fence for a while. I bought all 3 of the albums, Crazy from the Heat, 5150 and Eat’em and Smile, and like all of them. I heard the stories about Dave being a prick and how he was kicked out and didn’t know what to believe. That was until the Eat’em and Smile tour came to my hometown. I heard Dave on the radio, bashing my man Ed. I was heartbroken, and I skipped the concert, swearing allegiance to the VH brothers.
I have since come to realize that I was blinded by hero worship, and I am sorry. I was on the side of evil and I know that now. I just felt I needed to come clean in order not to be a hypocrite. I beg forgiveness from the Diamond One himself, if you actually read these things, and to all REAL VH fans everywhere.
It is true “When you think of Eddie Van Halen, you think of Van Halen, but when you think of Van Halen, you think of David Lee Roth”!
