Has Dave written new Van Halen songs while waiting ?

Anyone ever wonder if Dave has written a few tunes that he has kept
in his own "vault" should a reunion ever happen ?? You know, special
    melodies and lyrics in anticipation.

*OR* do you think he only writes after he hears Ed's riff ???

DLRBAND2 (The songs Van Halen were meant to get ???)

    Oooh it makes me wonder....

The DLRBAND2 Reference (for those tangentally challenged) is, do you think we might get a DLRBAND2 album with some of these tunes Dave has been sitting on ??? Should the real deal be finally buried.
(Which cant be too far away) Will Dave open the vaults and give us
that one last Rocker that Van Half Assed could never produce ?

(Tangentally ??) thats my new favourite beer word.

      What an interesting question Panamark.

First, keeping in mind Dave's amazing memory, I am not sure that he has tons of lyrics "written" just sitting and waiting, but feel it safe to say that he always has ideas floating around. Now whether or not he he has "ideas" with Edward, Alex and Michael in mind, I don't know. I wonder too.

Then there are so many other questions that come into play.

When do words become a song? It the ole Reseeses effect... did Dave's words inspire Ed's riffs? Did Ed's riffs inspire Dave's words? or were they just two great tastes that taste great together?

Would Dave withhold a killer song from his current band and "save himself" for three people who have given him so little respect or recognition?

Would any classic Van Halen song be such a killer song played by any other band?

      The world may never know.

There is also the flip side, has Ed written songs that he's put to one side for Dave and the real re-union?

          Good point Don.

Or is it that only Dave knows how to make magic out of Ed's noodling?

            Cool answers guys !

A song to me (and Im a guitarist) is when you sing it.
You are recalling the melody and lyrics. Not the guitar
riff. LMS, there can be songs before the riff.

Don, Im sure Ed has written some tunes with that in
mind. In fact I remember a report about 3 years ago
where a fan had reportedly overheard EVH talking
drunk in a restaurant, EVH was saying, "thats it, its over
with Dave, Im not writing anymore songs with him in mind"

How many did he write ??

Could Dave sing a tune and Ed write a riff, yes !!
Could Ed write a riff and Dave write a melody, yes !!

Its amusing pondering how much of this is floating out
there.. I like to think theres an albums worth. Even if
we dont get the big tour. Give us the last album guys.

PLEASE DONT LET "UP FOR BREAKFAST" BE VAN HALEN'S
            SWANSONG.

Van Halen's swan song was "1984".

Sorry excuses to con people into shelling out their money for a greatest hits cd (I didn't)

Like I said, "1984" IS Van Halen's swan song.

I think he only writes after he hears Ed's riff, but how he wrote on his own is anybody's guess.

Didnt Dave once say in an interview that in order to "write" a song he requires the presence of another musician? I could swear I remember reading that quote someplace. Cool thread Mark...and nice twist to it Don.

I can't imagine Dave would sit on a great song waiting for a reunion that may never happen. When Dave sits down to record, I'd imagine he's going to go with whatever material he thinks is the strongest at the time.

I believe they played off of one another...just Ed and Dave. All alone. Once they got to a point where Ed knew the basslines and had a framework recorded would they pull in Alice and bassplayer.

Don't fool yourselves into thinking Dave can't play an instrument. He's no dummy and can write on his own as well. I happen to believe that Dave is best when he doesn't have to write the music and can concentrate on the lyrics and how he's going to sing the song, and the same for Ed...not having to worry about singing a chorus or writing lyrics. How many times has Ed come out in print and stated that he can't write lyrics? Hell, even Spammy laughed at that one and yucked it up!

As far as sitting on anything...I don't know about that. There are several record companies that would give decent cash for CVH live material...and if they could only put together the cuts on Best Of 2 and not record anything more meaningful...leads me to believe that they had nothing to begin with and that it was too much effort for the sisters to put up with. I think they only saw a payday with a "world tour" and were going to string the fans into believing they were going to record with Spammy again to keep the "dream" alive.

I believe with them...what you see is what you get and that's why the CVH is the best...it was all of the stuff that they worked together on and formulated. Ted worked his magic too. Some of 5150 was probably sitting around when Dave was there but he wouldn't go near it...it didn't fit the "mold" they had cast themselves in. Kinda makes sense to me that Van Hagar went with the synths and love ballads because Ed thought it would sell in the same way Dave though Louis Prima and Beach Boy covers would too.

Agree 100%. it's been far too long of waiting on our part.

and if dave IS writing music in hopes of a reunion...well, that's a little sad at this point? It'd be like fantasizing about what words you would say to get back together with a girl who you broke up with 20 years ago. and, let's face it, if Dave had some tunes, odds are we would've gotten to hear them rather than a bunch of covers on Diamond Dave.
