I find it obvious that Scorpions' grand, flamboyant guitarist was a major influence in Ed's technique. You can hear many sounds he must have picked up in 4 early Scorpions albums, "Fly to the rainbow" (74), "In trance" (75), "Virgin killer" (76) and "Taken by force" (77).
Especially as soon as the intro of "Speedy's coming", you can but think of then forthcoming VH, the lead and solo in "Dark Lady" also obviously sound "familiar". A lot of fast tracks make it obvious as well. I won't mention them all in detail, it would be too long and I don't like talking about technique.
I know English-speaking people are uneasy with the Scorpions' records, due to K. Meine's weird English and accent, but I'm sure many buddies round here dig their old-time music. So, do you agree with my remarks, and who else do you see who can have influenced younger Eddie? (please don't mention Hendrix, for whose guitarist's life didn't Jimi revolutionize?). Thanx for helping!
i realy feel that i had a big influence on ed.

Yelp, your the man, 5 Stars for you bro.

Gosh, I was about to lose faith in the R.A. crew here!!!

Hell West's signature sound is all over EVH's stuff, specially Eddie's dips and growls with that "fat sound".

I'll post the pics and all the stuff of the night EVH played with Leslie at the House of Blues in L.A. a few years back. Leslie played the unsuspecting crowd perfectly.

Said something to the effect, that he was going to let a local guitar contest winner come out and play with him later,,,,,,,, and later he brings the guy out , it's Eddie Van Halen and the crowd goes crazy when they break into Mountain's "Never in My Life" together on stage. Man, I love that song!!

I have a tape of it some place in my AV library. Haven't seen in years, will have to look for it.

Here's some stuff on the gig

The Legendary Leslie West with Surprise Guest - Eddie Van Halen
House of Blues- Los Angeles – Saturday, August 10, 2002

Here is the pertinent part/extract of the shows professional review and some pics:

Leslie started with classic Leslie solos to warm up and ripped into Blood of the Sun, this was followed by Leslie talking to the audience about an "amateur" guitarist who he had invited on stage. This amateur was none other than Eddie Van Halen. That’s right, Eddie Van Halen.. They proceeded to rip into "Never In My Life" trading licks back and forth. Talk about loud. Leslie, the pro that he is, let Eddie take most of the soloing and all the fills until it was his turn and then he taught the virtuoso a thing about tone and vibrato. I mean, I love Eddie, no doubt he is one of the greatest ever, but less is sometimes more when it comes to expression on the guitar. Still it was a thrill to see the respect given to Leslie by Eddie.

              Another Show Reviewer’s Comments:

He I was there, and it was killer to see a legend like Edward Van Halen jump up there with the legendary Leslie West!! Leslie and Edward are tops! They both wail and have killer tone as well... It's great to see them still hanging out, cuz those 2 have been buds for well over 20+ years now!!

I even have a killer quote from Lesie I wanted you to read... Check this out. It's from Guitar World Magazine back in the late 80's. Lesie is talking about how by 1977 he was burned out and had pretty much stopped playing guitar! Spending a lot of the time getting his head right and kicking drugs & alcohol. But then in early 1978 Lesie saw Edward VH play...

"I'd stopped playing, didn't even want any guitars around. But while I was in Milwaukee I went to see two shows. Once was because Neal Schon of Journey said to me 'Leslie, you gotta check out this kid who's opening for us; he plays guitar like an organ, like a Bach organ fugue. I was totally taken aback- it was Eddie Van Halen, and he impressed me the way Clapton impressed me."

Not bad huh? lol... They then met and became pals ever since. Even hanging out in a hotel room one nite it was Leslie, Eddie and Carlos Santana! All carrying on having a great time joking and jamming according to Leslie. In fact,Van Halen took Leslie and his band on tour in the late 80's as an opening act for VH!!

Leslie West & Wolfgang Van Halen resemblance

Here's some pics of Leslie and his band Mountain in the early 70's
and then several current pics of Wolfie

Leslie is the fat guy and the long black hair, playing the Flying A

What do you think? Father? LOL
