Why I've decided that I'm glad Dave quit Van Halen

Sarge posted some parts of Crazy From The Heat a little while ago and some of that got me thinking:

I'm glad Dave quit Van Halen when he did.

    Allow me to explain why.

...but the chemistry between us was becoming morbid, it was becoming threatening and nonproductive. You can hear it in the music, it started turning melancholy right after I left.
This is the way I see it, Dave saw the iceberg ahead and decided bale out before the ship sunk. Then, as we all know, he went on to kick ass on his own. Had he stayed, I think it would have come to the "poetic felonies" and "melancholy power ballads" that we see happening in Sam Halen and Van Daniels. As it is Van HALEN went out on top. We can look back and say that shit was for real, not something that went downhill fast. We can still say David Lee Roth is a man that kicks ass and takes names.

If Ed and Alex want to get back together with the Ched Rocker, whatever, this is a free country, but they already know they can't touch the original.

    Or at least they should.

I'm glad that we've got an unsullied picture of what Rock and Roll is all about and should be, and that was Van Halen.

I really like Dave's solo stuff... but
I would like 1 more Damm Van Halen album!
Just fookin' 1, and a tour!

If it doesn't happen.. then that's cool as long as Dave keep releasing stuff and touring.

Dave might have quit Van Halen but he has wanted back in and pubicly stated so since the late 80's

If I had seen VH in the early '80s I really wouldn't care. I'd certainly want a reunion but I wouldn't be dying for one. But because I never got to see them, that's why I want a reunion so badly.

I've come to the same conclusion.

If you look at Van Halen's last full-length album with Roth, 1984, you can hear the music getting soft.

Not to say Dave didn't have his fair share of fluff tracks on his solo albums post Van Halen but he had more than enough tunes which still kicked.

Was probably a good thing Roth bailed in 1985, rather than stick around "committing poetic felonies" singing "sanguine, sissified, grew-up-way-too-close-to-Mommy" lyrics on "melancholy power ballads".

The classic lineup pretty much peaked with Fair Warning. Not that Diver Down sucked, or that 1984 was a total washout. Possible that they could have done better things together after 1984? Maybe. Calls for speculation. Fruitless excercise.

But I wasn't totally unimpressed with Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More. I think it was Entertainment Weekly who, when reviewing those two tracks in 1996, said that they brought something new to the table: poignancy.

Was the best thing in 1985 for Roth to split.

Even the 1996 fallout had an upside: The DLR Band CD. Maybe it took being duped by the Van Halens to get Roth off his ass and make non YFLM/Vegas style music, and return back to the hard rock form.

Today, there's no question that what's left of Van Halen and Roth should get back together.

As much of a letdown as it was, there were a few spots on Van Halen 3 that show, if nothing else, that Ed was still capable of playing some mean guitar. The Diamond Dave CD, well.......maybe in time it'll find a place in my CD player, much the way it took a couple of years for YFLM to sink in (still not my favorite, but it has it's moments). MWM and CGTSNM displayed the potential for a future for the classic lineup in the studio, beyond just a golden-oldies reunion tour.

I dunno, I just can't see Dave singing a fucking power ballad. He would have voted the fuck out of Love Walks In or Dreams, so I don't think you would ever have to hear that shit out of him. (Although, I think about the unreleased Angel Eyes track, which is a power ballad along the lines of Patience by GnR. Mind you it was recorded long before GnR was ever thought about.)

I think Me Wise Magic would have still been the direction that a Dave-led Van Halen would have ended up. Or Can't Get This Stuff No More...which is Diver Downish sounding to my ears. To me, when Dave left, the music of Van Hagar just didn't have the bluesy, soulfull sound it had with DLR. I think Dave's voice suggested a certain way for Edward to play, and if you pay attention, Ed played a lot more bluesy and aggressive with Roth in the band. Sammy's voice on the other hand suggested writing shit in the vein of Loverboy and Journey. Not that there's anything particularly wrong with bands like that, but it ain't Van Halen.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love a Van Halen reunion. I grew up not being aloud to listen to that kind of music until Hagar and still I've been arguing with people 10 years older than me that Dave is the man.

But look at bands like Led Zeppelin. It seems like they lost it after Physical Graffiti or maybe even during (depends on when you ask me.) Who's to say that wouldn't have happened to Van Halen had they gone on.

I think a reunion album would kick ass because Dave is still fresh and the proof is in Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More, DLR Band and even Diamond Dave (which was just Dave bieng Dave and I dig that).

How many times does somebody lie,
                'til patience runs off course.
Keep that in mind when we say goodbye,
'Cos you can't get this stuff no more.
It's like Dave was talking right to Eddie. I find that chorus to be the be-all-end-all descriptions of music today.

I am only 25 years old, I would love to see a VH reunion.

It would give me at lest one chance in my life to see the greatest rock band in history.

Didn't Eddie kick Dave out of the band also?

I always thought it went both ways.

The first Interview Edward ever did to explain how Sapmmy came to be in the band he said with his own mouth that Dave left.
He even acted as though he was disappointed about it...

But to quote Roth on this very question "I guess it just depends on which interview you are reading at the time"

I'm so glad he left VH! EEAS with Steve Vai outshines any of the previous music.

Me Wise Magic & Can't Get This Stuff No More don't even come close to Yankee Rose, Ladies Night, Tobacco Road, Big Trouble, etc....

Dave keeps making stellar tunes that would not be made with ED.

                        To list a few here!

                        BAD HABITS
                        GOING PLACES
                        BLACK SAND
                        NIGHT LIFE
                        DOGTOWN SHUFFLE
                        SHOWTIME
                        DAMN GOOD TIMES
                        SKYSCRAPER
                        JUST LIKE PARADISE
                        COCONUT GROVE
                        THUG POP
                        etc...

Ed's catalog without dave....spam lyrics with cheese music

                        Why Can't this be love
                        When It's Love
                        Love Walks In
                        Can stop Loving you
                        Round and Round
Pound Cake..............This list of music sucks!

The only song that comes to mind with great guitar from Ed......HUMAN BEINGS....off the Twister Sdtrk.

Ed rather be at home and not on the road anyways. He doesn't care about the fans, ets....

3 out of 4 members of EEAS band are on the road performing all the time

                        Dave
                        Steve
                        Billy

EEAS would be the only reunion worth mentioning, because of the talent, rock music, and no cheesy love lyrics.

Well perhaps I shouldn't have typed there was nothing "wrong" with those bands. LOL What I mean is, there is always going to be that element in music but we don't need that element from Van Halen.
