Ed and Al bitching about all the cover tunes on Diver Down...fuck 'em!
They had shit-eating grins plastered on their faces the whole time they were playing live with Roth, including when they played Dancing In The Streets. Leads me to believe:
a) they were faking their contentment onstage
b) Dave dictated the setlists and the Van Halens were a couple of
pussies who couldn't say no to Roth, which ties in with
c) Roth really did call most of the shots when he was in the band,
and Ed and Al are whining about it after the fact.
Dancing was never one of my favorites either, but the number of classic tracks I'm ho-hum about (maybe a half-dozen, and by ho-hum I mean that they aren't the first tracks I go to when I play the record)is far smaller than the number of Van Hagar tunes I'm totally indifferent to (basically all of them except for maybe 2 or 3, and even those I could give a shit if I ever hear again).
Plus, EVH says Diver is the nadir of CVH's career for him...just goes to show he has shit in his ears when it comes to rating his own music:
Hang 'Em High
Secrets
Little Guitars
The Full Bug
those four tunes alone are worth the price of the album, and nothing 'Van Halen' did after Roth left even comes close to any one of them.
I would agree, you watch them in the past playing South America and they played Dancing in the Streets, Ed seemed enthusiastic! If he really hated the song, he sure doesn't let it show! If it was associated to Roth, he hates the fact. Sure, it's nothing great, but I'll take Dancing over any spammy tunes!
Diver Down has a great vibe to it and, with Hang 'Em High, Full Bug, Little guitars, and Secrets, well, you can't go wrong!
