    "Mistakes" on the 6-Pack

Hey, I'm researching for an assignment about the appeal of imperfection in the world.

Seems to me that Dave always pushed to leave in some flubs on the original 6. To show the chaos, the human-ness and the who-gives-a-shit attitude. Part of it indeed was the short times they had in the studio early on. I know Ed hated it.

But I can't find any support information. A little help? TIA.

BTW, this is the spirit that developed Dave's forgetting "the fucking words" at every tour stop in 1982-83.

    Gotta love it.

        My question is:

Can you show me an artilce or quote illustrating that Dave wanted mistakes left on recordings?

Thought I remembered several, but came up with zip supporting material in the last 48 hours.

I know there is a reference in his book...I just don't have the book with me or the time to find it.

          Look in the book though.

Since Eddie has indeed “pulled an Elvis” as you say, would you still be willing to join Van Halen?

At some point down the line if they’re prepared to do the exact right thing and there’s an incredible high arch of excellence, not terms of perfection. There’s a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision, like your favorite jeans with the hole in them. Those are particularly wabi-sabi. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it’s bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Can you dig what I’m saying? And, Van Halen is that. I am that. I’m somewhere between Bruce Lee and the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz. Actually, think of me as the Wizard of Oz, but with a little reverb.

Other specific examples; C'mon Dave give me a break stuff & Omitting a line or 2 from Pretty Woman 'cause they forgot exactly how it went.

Wabi-sabi. That's the idea. Wabi-sabi is more about things. I wanna expand the idea to the holes in humanity.

Like falling head over heels for the one-legged hooker. Or not being self-concious about my abnormally huge dick. Or was that just an abnormally huge ego? I could be confused.

Didn't Ed flub one of the verses on that one as well? I'm sure I remember some interview where he claimed to hate that track because he screws up one of the verses....

There's also the Unchained video where Ed goes into the verse riff, realizes he's screwed up, then goes back to the chorus (it's in the intro)

The "raw and edgy" sound is what makes those recordings the best that I have ever heard. Everything to day is extremely layered, plolished, digital from the start and has no "real" quality.

well now they are just like every other band. Before they stood out as THE band. Wonder why Ed and co. hasn't noticed the change?

Check the lyrics for "Everybody Wants Some." The printed lyrics and the lyrics on the record are different. On the record dave mumbles --he admits this in his book, not sure exactly where-- but he thought the take sounded good so they left it in. I believe it's the second verse.
