Carmine, this is indeed a great thread. I haven't been here much in a while because of some of the foolishness here, but this is a thread that truly brings us all together.

The common bond we all have, especially the fans near our age, is that we were there for the shows.....for the airtime the songs first got on the radio......and for so many subtle things we all went through in common like being the only person in a group of the average twenty or so who didnt fall for the "brainwashing" of the pop culture and realized that CVH at the time was as big as the Beatles ever were in their hay-day but in an "underground" kind of way.

My first experience with CVH was probably hearing "You Really Got Me" and "Ain't Talkin Bout Love" on the radio......but seeing a poster of the band at a friend's house and hearing "Ice Cream Man" on the album they had was what first got me hooked. Then it was my goal to own a Van Halen album.....and I never was able to buy one until Fair Warning came out, and Unchained and the Mean Street Tap sent me completely over the edge as a guitarist. I absolutely HAD to see them someday.

Then later the local rock station played the famous live van halen songs on the radio from time to time, and I got to hear the "westwood one" radio-show coverage of the US Festival.......the famous "Tell you what.....fuck the concert, let's go across the freeway and get a drink, whaddaya sayyyy".......lol. I eventually bought some mail-order bootleg cassette tapes! I wish I could meet the persons who made them someday, lol. The one tour I wish I could've seen live would've been Diver Down. I'm sure the Fair Warning tour was just as great. I've seen the whole bootleg video of the US Festival, and I loved it. The westwood-one radio coverage of that show had some very funny interviews with Dave.

I remember that Monday night radio show, "Rockline", when they had Van Halen as their guest one time, without Eddie, and it was the most hilarious interview in history. It was during the release of 1984. Dave was just unleashed on the airwaves, busting balls and doin his thing the whole time, with Mike and Al playing the parts of twin Ed Mcmahons. ("Yes"-men from way back) "Dave, what do you do to keep your voice in top shape?" *responds in an innocent voice* "well, I do tounge push-ups"
"Liiiiiive in front of your naked steaming earssss"

*Dave gets close to the microphone* "Put the microphone against your body...now....hear the sound of my voice as it travels up your stomach...and into your brain......just like my words....already are..."
*someone puts a tape player up to the microphone which spews forth a song* "I'm a girl watcher......I'm a girl watcher..."

maybe you had to be there...lol

My one and only time seeing the Mighty Van Halen (I've also seen the sucky van halen, but we won't go into that) was for the 1984 tour, in Providence RI.....maybe on the same night as the other person in this thread mentioned. I absolutely loved the show. Best concert I've ever been to, and rumor has it that the Panama video was filmed on one of the nights there. I remember that this was going to be the first time I'd ever seen Eddie live and was hoping to glean some knowledge from seeing him play the meanstreet tap......but even seeing it live I went away with absolutely no clue! I was so much in awe however that I can't recall any specific moments to describe......but I'll say this: It was as energetic and fucking phenomenal as any show they ever did! That, my friends, was the majic of Diamond Dave......as many shows as they did he never let it get boring or redundant like so many performers so often allow themselves to do.

This was my Van Halen, The Mighty Van Halen.

Well, that's my story, once again Carmine, great thread.

Oh, by the way, I propose changing the commonly used "CVH" to a more accurate "MVH" .....

I think the keyword for Van Halen is 'fun'. I'm an all Sword and Sorcery kind of guy, and an irredeemable Metalhead, therefore my favorite bands have always been ManOwaR, Rhapsody, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc.

But the problem with these bands is... there's no fun!

I bought the game Vice City and one song from VRock started to rise above all others because of it's carefree, laidback, freewheelin' style... Yep, I'm talking about a Yankee Rose!

I immediately became a bigger fan of Dave, as I was already somewhat of a fan ever since I saw the video for 'Just A Gigolo'. Best damn videoclip I'd ever seen. Thought nothing could beat it. Until I watched California Girls. :D

Problem is, all I knew about Dave is that he sang with Van Halen... and I HATED Van Halen. Guess why...

Becoming tired of hearing the same song over and over, I bought a Dave album and... let's just say it culminated with me here, alright? Therefore, THANK YOU Van Halen for releasing that great six pack, and THANK YOU David Lee Roth for never giving up despite all those times the Devil farted on your face.

So, Brothers and Sisters of the Mighty Roth Army, let us raise a glass in honor of past times and the great and only David Lee Roth! Cheers! :bottle:

And always remember that the age of ALAN is at hand. Who knows, or dares even imagine what great things await us?

              Cheers! :bottle:

I saw "my Van Halen" live in the early 80's and I am here to tell ya, they just don't do concerts like they used to. (No, not Van Hagar-the business in general.)

As long as we are dreaming lets just get kinky. If Van Halen is gonna return to their roots, I want to see them in a hell raisin, tail gating back yard bonanza blast.

People say a lot about who and what ruined Van Halen; and I ain't talkin bout no Samuel Roy Hagar. I think it just stopped being fun. And fun boys and girls, is what Van Halen is all about. I want to see them like I have never seen them before, and lets go out like we came in.

I'm like you carmine ,i never had the chance to see CVH and that's so sad! I remember once back in 1979 they were opening for Black Sabbath over in France and i was ready to go in Reims( a french town) to see them but my parents told me :"no way son, you're not going to take the train by yourself. You too young(i was 16) and the concert was 120 miles away from home ,so i missed the mighty Van Halen! And after that VH never show up in France until 1995 with, we know who! But I saw DAVE for the Skyscraper tour in 1988 and it was great .I ever meet him after the show and talked to him.I take some pictures with him and he signed my concert 's ticket with Steve Vai.I would never forget that moment,it was like seeing God for me,i least the God of rock!
little french dreamer hate those Van Hagar backstage party!!
