    Dave To Follow Stern?

Is David Lee Roth the next Howard Stern?

"He was the best so far," said one Infinity/CBS employee about the auditions for a Stern replacement.

The former Van Halen lead singer recently tried out as a nighttime talk-show host at FM talk station KLSX (97.1 FM) in Los Angeles.

"They also auditioned [comic] Norm MacDonald and [ The Simpsons writer and producer] Sam Simon, who worked as a team. Norm MacDonald was awful. Tommy Chong is coming in. They are talking with everybody from Andrew 'Dice' Clay, Adam Carolla, Jimmy Kimmel, Robin Williams, and Chris Rock," said the employee, who did not want to be identified.

Last week Stern said the day a bill passes that will allow individuals to be personally fined $500,000 by the FCC for each incident of on-air indecency, he would stop talking and start playing music until he leaves traditional radio in December. That bill, authored by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives February 16. -- Ken Leighton http://www.sdreader.com/published/current/blurt.html

    I love Dave...
but if record executives thought Norm MacDonald was "awful", it probably means he was freaking hilarious. Norm is the man.

Dave might be a little too fast paced (aka: hyper) for a 4 hour show, in my opinion. Dave's "bookworm-cokehead" schtick (and I do believe it's just part of him trying to be funny - I'm not calling him coke addict) is freaking hilarious at 20 minutes a pop or so in interviews, but I could see it being laborious after more than an hour or two.

Anyway, that's all assuming this is true.

And let me just say - taking all the news the San Diego Reader can fire at me with its truth cannon - if I had to listen to Robin Williams for more than a minute on end, we are talking a major run on fertilizer, nitro glyceren, and matches; ending the comic pain in a Looney-Tunes worthy display.

Having been in the business of radio for so long, I'd agree... thats a fair take. But, I'd also counter that he and whomever would produce such a venture would be wise enough to expand and vary the "setlist", so-to-speak.

Not just anyone can pull it off, not even to a mediocre level, but I could certainly see Dave doing so. Its anything but a "one act" play... Dave, yep, I sure could see him pulling it off...

This kind of sounds like a JOB. Dave is more like an adventure.

The whole EMT thing. That was cool. That was understandable. That was learning a new trick. That was a donation of time to a cause of sorts. But this?

Wouldn't Dave trying to follow in Stern's tracks be like Sam trying to follow in Dave's? If they censorded Howard off the air and into seclusion, wouldn't the Dave we would get be a watered down, milk and Nissan type of version of what Stern devoted so much of himself to?

Better give this one some thought Dave, and devote your energy to a real reunion or a few new releases with your current band.

Good for you, LOU. Why post in this thread then, asshole? Why not let other people actually debate it without being a fucking dink about it?

About as much sense as Andrew "Dice" Clay putting on a "family friendly" radio program!

Howard Stern has been on auto-pilot for years. I can barely listen to him for five minutes, much less than twenty, so I'm certain Dave - with the right supporting cast - could do something great within radio.

Dave did a one day stint on 92.3 in NY a while back, I think to push "Diamond Dave" which obviously didn't work. He was on for a few hours along with playing tunes. He was pretty good, but it felt wrong hearing him dj.

                        The guy is 50!

I'm sure he enjoys having a seat and rapping about whatever is on his mind as much if not more than leaping all around and presenting the same set-list - down to the jokes - he has for over seven years.

I love Dave, and I'll always catch him when he performs here in NYC (not nearly often enough), but, hey, when you get even Carmine Ragu complaining that the set needs to change and evolve, you nknow it's overdue!

Dave would very much enjoy being a broadcaster. His spiels from back in the day "Don't change the station, where on all the others, or at least we should be" displays an understanidng of the craft and the tradition of the medium.

I've got my fingers crossed for this.

Hey, this would be a nice 'retirement' for Dave. I mean, he's not getting any younger, the VH reunion is never going to happen, and you can only play the same setlist so many times.

We all know that unfortunately Davester has zero marketability these days, and only something very big would change the current state of affairs.

So I'm hoping for this, even if it means that I'll NEVER have a chance to see Dave live - but then again what chance have I, right now? At least he'll retire with dignity, while he is still somewhat big and a legend.

                          Cheers! :bottle:

Now a great story is when I met Robin Williams on Clement Street and scared the shit out of him.

Mezro...I tried to get him to improv with me but he did not bite...
