On March 24th, 1949, "Hamlet" was named best picture at the Academy Awards. Its star, Laurence Olivier, won the best actor award.

In 1955, the Tennessee Williams play "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" opened on Broadway.

In 1958, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Army in Memphis, Tennessee. He was discharged in 1960.

Also in 1986, Van Halen released their "5150" album, their first with Sammy Hagar on vocals.

In 1991, the Black Crowes were dropped as the opening act on Z-Z Top's tour for repeatedly criticizing Miller Beer, who was sponsoring the tour.

In 1993, a jury in Los Angeles decided actress Kim Basinger was guilty of backing out of a verbal agreement to star in the movie "Boxing Helena."

In 1997, singer Harold Melvin of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes died in his sleep at his home in Philadelphia. He was 57.

                  Bike ride to record store

You guys might make fun to me on this but I rode about 20 miles on a bicycle to go to the next city to but 5150. There was no record store in my town but the one next to me had a Wherehouse.

I hear "Why This Can't Be the Love" on the radio and was impression. I like Van Halen the group too much and I like Sammy from the 55 video so, when I hear he was the new singing in VH, I have to buy the record. I was broke and destitude at the time and didn't have a car like I have many now. When you want something. nothing can stop you.

5150 bring me back to a time right before I become the millionraire and didn't have car. After buy that record, things pick up for me now I own many, many nice cars. Could you say Mercedes or Rose Royce?

                  Oh, You Ate One Too?!?\m/\m/!!!

                      1) Also in 1986, Van Halen released their "5150" album, their first with Sammy Hagar on vocals.

                      2) In 1991, the Black Crowes were dropped as the opening act on Z-Z Top's tour for repeatedly criticizing Miller Beer, who was sponsoring the tour.

                      1) Sad day, for sure. That year my mum asked me what I wanted for getting through the next grade (a family tradition), and I said "David Lee Roth's album, mummy, if you can find it. "
She finally offered me "5150". Damned! I thanked her, pretending to be glad, but was disappointed, then pissed off as soon as the second stupid track.
The record dealer didn't have "Eat 'em and smile", so he advised her Van Hag... I hope he's suffering awesome pains by now.

                      2) Money can't buy rock 'n' roll! :D

Ah yes...the album cover where EVH redefined the "mullet."

And Spammy's hair had that blonde "Prince" quality to it, where he could probably twist his index finger in the curls over his forehead and then drag it sensually down to his lips...

Of course, that move was generally reserved for foreplay with Mikey...
