Ed's response was the incorporate keyboards into the 1984 album and make it more commercially viable. Which was a good idea, really; what he didn't count on was that Van Halen's arguably most memorable hit of all time, "Jump", became David's signature song.

Trying in a vain effort to capitalize on the success of "1984", Ed decided to go for broke and turn Van Halen into a friendlier band that your mom and dad could appreciate with songs like "Dreams", "Love Walks In", and so forth. The resulting album, "5150", was a great seller, but it wore out quickly, because people realized more and more with each successive release that they hated Sammy Hagar as Van Halen's safe lead singer and they didn't want a shitload of songs about love, jive and waxing it on down now.

Which led Van Halen down the hideous trail of misery and the end result dropped them off in the clearing they're currenly in - barren, empty and without mercy from the Diamond sun blazing overhead.

      Mm-hmm.

My least favorite VH songs are those with more keyboard and less guitar. I think when they introduced the keyboard they began to sound too much like other bands and lost their originality.

I wish Ed said "yeah, Dave, you're right".

                He cried. Seriously.

Or maybe that was another time...

During the WACF tour, he won another guitar award, and Dave gave him shit for it, or told him to win more, or something, but Ed went up to his hotel room to bawl, and a groupie by the name of Val came to 'his rescue'.

                  That's a true story!

As far as Jump and I'll Wait are concerned, I know Ed lied and said he had writer's block and these were the only tunes he could come up with. Not wanting to lose any more time between the next release, Dave accomodated.

As far as this being a collaborative effort, maybe Dave could have been more accomodating to Ed's artistic urges and wants to expand his musical horizons. But as Chuck Klosterman points out in sex drugs and coca puffs (or is it fargo rock city?), Dave approached the gig not from the POV of a musicain, but from a fan's perspective.

Still, that'd be like his producer saying to Dave at the time of YFLM, "Hey, Dave, you're a rock god. No one wants to hear you duet with Travis Tritt and cover Willie Nelson."

Follow your own rabbit trail. It's all any of us can do.

Look, it isn't like Jump and I'll wait were the first keyboard tunes. And the Cradle Will Rock, Sunday Afternoon in the Park, One Foot Out the Door, Dancin' In the Streets...all keyboard tunes.

I have no problem with Ed playing keyboards...after all it is his first instrument. However, to take it to the extreme Ed did with the power ballad thing...well in that case Dave was right.

I remember a few years ago that Dave said Edward was the best guitarist he's ever played with...when he guides him. I've already heard what Dave does to guide his musicians...according to a member of the DLR Band, Dave just tells you what parts he likes, and what parts he doesn't like. He isn't hateful about it, but is more like a producer.

TO me Dave sounds like a good guy to work for/with, but then only those guys who have been in his bands would know....this is concerning Dave's solo career...I would not trust the Sisters to have anything truthful or relevant to say....

That crap about EVH having writers block on jump is stupid. That solo sounded like Ed took some time in creating it. He wanted to make a pop song and he got what he wanted. Being put in ed's shoes, say 1984, after 10 years of Dave must have been frustrating. Dave was a fan of his own band, and having a fan tell you how to make music instead of being able to do whatever the fuck you want has to drive you crazy some times. He was also a fan of EVH and wanted him to push his own limits to have him be the best guitarist he could be. When Hagar came, the motivation was lost because a fan stopped creating the music, and a fan stopped pushing EVH to his greatness. Instead of a fan, a cheese monkey was making the music! Fuckin hagar...

jump was written around '80 so the theory of ed having writers block is crap

EVH pouted & cried like the BITCH he is when DAVE said that to him. And he NEVER forgave DAVE for doubting his "Artistic vision".
