Think you're missing something:
Van Hagar is Van Halen in name only.
Someone not liking what Sam, Ed, Mike and Al did musically doesn't mean same person can't get off on what classic Van Halen did, because they are two different bands.
And, yes, there is a pro-Roth bias on this site. For myself, has nothing to do with being a Dave fan all along, even back in the day. Back when CVH were together, EVH's guitar playing was the drawing power for me. Vast majority of people here have indicated that they listened to what Van Hagar had to offer before they decided it wasn't for them, rather than reject it out of hand before hearing it just because Dave wasn't there.
If Roth rejoined the band, the only thing that would matter to me is if whatever new music they came up with was any good. Wouldn't be the case that all would instantly be forgiven re: Ed, Al and Mike and their attitude towards the classic lineup over the last 20 years if they announced tomorrow that CVH was back in the studio/rehearsing for a tour. Nothing to forgive, really. Sam, Ed, Al and Mike come off like a bunch of assholes in print, but the music is the bottom line.
If Van Hagar's music appealed to me, it'd be a different story. Same with Sam. Since none of it does, the four members of Sam Halen, individually and collectively, come off like a bunch of guys who, when they slam Dave, are shitting all over classic Van Halen while offering nothing of use in CVH's place, and are dealt with here accordingly. Roth gets a pass in terms of his comments towards Van Hagar/Sam because his contribution to VH and his solo work are, to these ears, superior to what Van Hagar and Sam Hagar came up with.
